David Samuel Morrill, the son of Dr. Samuel Morrill and Sarah Elizabeth Virgin, was born February 22, 1873, in the Marlboro community, near present-day Farmville, North Carolina. A native of New Hampshire, his father had studied medicine at Harvard and moved to North Carolina in the 1850s. David S. Morrill studied medicine at the University of Maryland and, in 1898, opened his medical practice in Marlboro. After his father's death in 1905, Morrill settled in Farmville. He was an active member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Farmville and served as a town commissioner. He was married to Alice Atkinson. At the time of his death on August 8, 1963, Morrill was the oldest practicing physician in Pitt County. He was buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Farmville. His book,
The Passing Clouds
, contains stories he told to his young patients.
