6 October 1960

Mr. Bert Bennett

State Democratic Campaign Headquarters

Sir Walter Hotel

Raleigh, North Carolina

Dear Bert:

I enclose a small contribution to the campaign fund and ask that it be credited toward the Pitt County quota.

Lately the Nixon-Gavin crowd has become very active and vocal in this county. It is composed of sorehead Democrats, mavericks with no place to go, defectors who lack any sense of party loyalty or principal. It appears that a great deal of money is being pumped in from outside to keep this gang alive. I believe this has created enough of a nuisance to arouse the county organization. Already it seems to be a lot more active than in the 1956 campaign.

If there is any way that I can be of help from this quarter please let me hear from you.

 Sincerely yours,

 Joseph F. Steelman

 Associate Professor of History
