Martin County farmer John Conrad Getsinger, Sr., a native of Wurttemburg, Germany, participated as a sergeant in Company E of the 1st Regiment of N.C. Volunteers during the Mexican War (1847-1848). This sketch is from his sketchbook made during his stay in Mexico, and depicts an eagle with a serpent in its beak and talons, over a cactus. The caption reads "Mexican flage and shilde." more...
