Description
14 negatives of U.S. Army Steam Tugs. Writing on the photos reads "Marietta Mfg. Co., Pt. Pleasant, W.VA, Cont. #W-2789-tc-252, [varying hull #, dates, and tc #]." The Marietta Manufacturing Company was formed in 1892 in Marietta, Ohio; it was one of the major inland shipyards in the country. After officially moving to Point Pleasant under a West Virginia charter in 1915, the company ceased operation in February 1970. During World War II, Marietta constructed ships for the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army and the Defense Plant Corporation.
