"Can we make the changes? Time will let us know. If we're pulled too far apart, we might just let go. There's no situation we cannot work through, but no one's gonna do it for us except for me and you. Somehow can't we rise above the pain?"
Henry Farrell 0:52
Hello, my name is Henry Farrell, I have the privilege of chairing the Greenway Utilities Commission. I was thinking the other day, considering all the events that happened this September, of some of the ancient times. Long before the United States was ever settled, the practice of European cities and villages was to have watchmen during the night, so that no bad events would occur, nobody would sneak in and steal the wheat or grab the pig. From time to time, you could hear a voice echo through the village streets and city streets, "Watchmen, what of the night?", and the reply would come back; "All is well." It seems to me that that same kind of thing happened to us in September. Although most of us who live in the city and county, Pitt, Greenville, did not know exactly what was going on at the river. We knew that we had watchmen on guard. When the call went forth, "Watchmen, what of the night?", the Greenville Utilities employees answered, "All is well." As a high moment of contribution to the community, let me express my personal opinion and- and that of the board, of your great work and success in preventing further disasters. As you grow old and greet your grandchildren and great grandchildren around your knees, and tell about the events of September, you'll remember these things, thank you again.

"We have come to know that we just rise above. Can we make the changes?"
Malcolm Green 2:40
Good evening, as we began to celebrate the Christmas season, it's a perfect time to just to stop for a moment to reflect back on Hurricane Floyd. We really did see some tremendous, courageous, heroic actions taken place by our employees, the just- just the extra effort to make sure that our system kept going, that our customers were served, almost not worrying about our own homes; in many cases were flooded, cars were flooded, families were home without [] to work with them. What an outpouring of dedication. It'd been easy to just say "Oh, it's a flood, it's never happened before. We'll just come back afterwards and turn it all back on." No, not the GUC employees. We were dedicated to make sure it didn't go off or if it went down, we brought it right back up. The community itself has shown a tremendous thank you. Even today, they stop you on the street wearing a uniform I'm sure as you're walking to a store, and just Sunday, someone was thanking me for it today at lunch. It's everywhere you go, people are saying how much it meant to them for knowing that we had our utility services going in this community and other communities be it not, and the ability to keep everything flowing. Just- just looking at the pictures from small children, and they're just beginning to learn how to write, and they wanted to first things they want to do is right to the Utility and thank them for working here, just- just what an amazing amount of heroism that was shown to this community. And again, just from my family, myself, I want to thank you for the extra effort and dedication you put forward to have to serve our communities.

"And our love will shine where it has rained. What we need now is to rise above. All of this confusion, just to rise above. All the tears and all the fears we have come to know, that we just rise above."
Dr. Richard Eakin 4:43
In every disaster, there are heroes. And the heroes of Floyd in the aftermath, the flood, in my book are people who work for Greenville Utilities. Their heroism in coping with the floodwaters putting them- their lives literally at risk is something that I think I shall never forget, and I also will never forget the- the ingenuity that Matt Green and all of the staff brought to bear on a very difficult situation. We at the university were really, very much in fear of what a lack of power, a lack of water might do to our university. While we had some short outages, we did not have anything that- that would be classified as a real problem for us. We were able to get our students away, and able to cope very well with the situation as presented by Greenville Utilities.

"All the tears and all the fears we have come to know, if we just rise above. If we just rise above."

Eddie Smith 6:45
On behalf of my company, Grady White Boats, and on behalf of all the industries in the Greenville area, I want to thank each and every one of you for the tremendous jobs that you did during and after the flood. Your efforts to continue providing us the services that we have to have to operate our businesses were absolutely heroic, and there's no way that we can adequately thank you.

Valerie Dixon 7:21
My name is Valerie Dixon, and I am a previous Chair of the Board of Commissioners for Greenville Utilities Commission. My colleagues have teased me over the years regarding my pride and juicy. And, I will share with you that although the flood was a horrible event to occur in our community, one perspective is that it provided quite a showcase for the excellence of this organization, and all of you who are part of it. I must confess that I enjoyed the media coverage of Matt MacGuyver Green during the flood. But, I need you to know that the greater source of my pride was because I have had an opportunity to meet the cast of superheroes that are in addition to Matt Green, and I've had an opportunity to work with several of you directly and know of the excellence and dedication that all of you have for this organization. Just want to let you know that your services are greatly appreciated, and there are many, many, many cheerleaders out there in Greenville, North Carolina that now share a lot of the pride that several of us insiders have had for many years.

Gigi Walter 9:06
My name is Gigi Walter, and I've been a resident of Greenville for almost 50 years. There are not enough words in this dictionary, or in any dictionary to thank you for the efforts that all of you gave during the flooding after Hurricane Floyd. Your heroic efforts, your ingenuity is just unbelievable, and we owe you such a tremendous thanks. But not only do we owe a thanks to you, but we thank your families for all they gave during the time that you were away from home. I know that many of the employees of Greenville Utilities lost their homes too, and yet you remained helping to work and save our community. So thank you to both the employees of Greenville Utilities and to your families. May we all keep this spirit of giving and caring throughout the holidays, through the end of this year, and all through next year. I wrote a letter during the flood to the Greenville Utilities office in which I called you employees of Greenville Utilities heroes, but I didn't get it quite right, because you're far more than heroes. You're superheroes. Thank you so very much for all you gave to our community. Happy holidays.

"We've had trouble leaving, now there's just no doubt. If we really love each other, let's find someway out."
Mr. Joe Taft 10:57
I want to thank the Greenville Utilities Commission for the wonderful work they did, and helping the people of Greenville and Pitt County during the flood time season. Just recently, I remember in 1919 the flood they had then, when it was not as bad, in 1919 as it is- as this one we have just had. I appreciate again- I want to say I appreciate the wonderful service that the Greenville Ulitities rendered the people of this community. It was a very trying time for most people, and we say good help that the Greenville Utilities rendered, it made it better for the people here.

What we need now is to rise above. All of this confusion, just to rise above. All the tears and all the fears we have come to know, we just rise above. We just rise above."
