I believe the Henry Douthit mentioned on the first page of this letters is Henry J. Douthit, my great-uncle. He was brother to my great-grandfather Dr. John Emory Douthit, surgeon in the Civil War. I believe he studied under a Dr. A. C. Wharton, possibly at Trinity College before obtaining his medical degree at the Univ. of Pennsylvania in 1858.
