MINUTES OF STAFF MEETING
Psychology Department
March 29, 1971

The Psychology Department held its March meeting at 4 o'clock in EP 103 on March
29, 1971.

All members were present except Mrs. Stapleton, Dr. Kinzie and Mr. Whitley, who
had conflicting meetings.

Dr. Prewett presided and announced that the North Carolina Psychological Association
would meet in Winston-Salem, North Carolina April 29-May 1. Dr. Prewett will be
installed as president at this meeting. The Southeastern Psychological Association
meeting is scheduled for the same time in Miami, and the North Carolina Mental
Health Research Council is also meeting at that time in Wilmington.

Dr. Mitchell informed the group that as Chairman of the North Carolina Psychological
Association Legislative Committee he had been in conference with Mr. Horton Rountree
in regard to steps to be taken in order to raise the fee for licensure and renewal
for psychologists in North Carolina. It is recommended that the fee for licensure
be raised from $25 to $50 and the renewal fee from $5 to $10. He states that this
was necessary from a financial standpoint as the Licensing Board was in financial
difficulties at this time; he also pointed out that North Carolina has the lowest
fee in the country.

Dr. Corwin announced that Psi Chi meeting was to be held Thursday night, April 1
at 7:30 and asked all the professors to inform their classes of this meeting.

Mrs. Harris asked about the advisability of having students members on the
Departmental committees. This was discussed briefly but no action taken.

Dr. Grossnickle presented the names for consideration for outstanding senior award.
Kenneth Richard Wrightwas elected as the outstanding senior in the Department.

recently and 13 students have been admitted to the clinical program. Dr. Mitchell
announced that 4 had been admitted to the general-theoretical program and Dr. Corwin
stated that one had been admitted to the school program.

Dr. Tacker reported for the 50/51 Committee. The Committee recommended the adoption
of Morgan and King as the text for these courses with the first ten chapters to be
covered in Psychology 50 and the last nine chapters in Psychology 51. Dr. Mitchell
seconded this recommendation and it passed with one dissenting vote.

Mrs. Harris made a motion that the 50/51 Committee consider the problem of pro-
tection of the test item file and the question of Departmental mid-term and final
exams for Psychology 50. Motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

Mrs. Harris asked whether the 5 hours transferred in from other colleges would meet
the requirements for the general introduction psychology~-Psychology 50 and
Psychology 5l--as the prerequisite for other courses. It was ruled that this would
be equivalent to Psychology 50 only.

Dr. Betty Jane Corwin was elected representative to the Faculty Senate for the
Department.

Dr. Prewett urged the staff members to consider submitting grant proposals to Dr.
James White. He also stated that he had some information in the office regarding
the possibility of research grants from the N. C. Committee on Law and Order and
invited interested staff members to examine the material.

Dr. Rogers announced that the North Carolina Board of Technology might also be
a source of funds for grants. He further stated that this Board did tend to be
highly industrial oriented and interested in immediate results.

Dr. Mitchell, reporting for the Curriculum Committee, presented the following
courses for consideration:

Psychology 307G--Psychology of Language--3 hours credit.

Psychology 313G--Laboratory Methods in Physiological Psychology--3 hours credit.

Psychology 422--Group Dynamics--3 hours credit.

Psychology 477--Seminar in Group Psychotherapy--3 hours credit.

After discussing each course the staff voted to accept the above listed courses.

Dr. Mitchell also asked that the rule regarding a new course being passed by the
Curriculum Committee before being brought before the full staff be waived and
Psychology 489--Advanced Experimental Psychology--be considered at this time.
Motion made and passed that this be permitted. After a full discussion motion was
made and passed that this course be referred back to the Curriculum Committee.
