IV. Instruction

A.

Comment on what is being done to attain or maintain a strong, consistent

demand for higher quality student performance.

One of the professors is using newer humanistic approaches to stimulate
discussion and participation in learning process by students.

In one of the graduate courses the professor is requiring all the students
to design a small, simple experiment, actually carry it out, and write a
report about it. It is believed this will give students insight into
doing research and to have some experience in professional writing.

In other classes by one of the professors the student is asked to master
the material presented in lectures and reading assignments; a study guide
is given to each student to assist in this. During each quarter five
hours are set aside as discussion periods. Material for discussion comes
from Scientific American reprints and Psi Chi Library. The students are
encouraged to choose a topic relevant to course work, study this topic on
their own, discuss the topic with the professor and this is counted as an
informal. examination.

For Psychology 380G, Psychology of Exceptional Child, each student has
been required to make a minimum of three field trips to institutions or
agencies providing residential care, training or other services for
exceptional individuals. Reports of observations and reactions follow
each field trip.

In Psychology 370G, Mental Hygiene in Schools, students have been re-
quired to keep an "intellectual diary" of their readings, observations,
and reactions to discussions, films, etc. This provides an opportunity
for the professor to sample the ability of the student to see the inter-
relationships among topics discussed, and his ability to see possibilities
for meaningful application of principles of mental health.

Report changes or modifications in: (1) teaching methods, (2) teaching

patterns, (3) student advising procedures, (4) orientation of new faculty

and teaching fellows, and (5) security measures for test materials.

(1) Several instructors are conducting experiments with their classes
using modified self-instructional and programmed methods.

(2) None

(3) None

(4) A meeting was held at the beginning of the academic year and a
professor instructed the teaching fellows as to their duties, re-
sponsibilities, and other information necessary to the performance
of their jobs.

(5) A locked room is used for the care of the tests. Each professor has
a space in this room which he can use to store his tests until needed.
This room has two keys which are kept by the secretaries. The door
has a special steel bolt type lock and it is kept locked at all times
when the office is not occupied.

V.

VI.

School or Departmental Development.

A. List areas of specialty within the fields that are thought to be necessary
or desirable to the present program or to the early expansion of the pro-
gram in which the school or department (1) has no qualified faculty member,
or (2) where the qualified faculty member within that field is within one
year of retirement.

B. Report activities of honor societies or work related to honor societies.

Psi Chi is the only honorary fraternity pertaining to psychology and the
Department continues to have an excellent chapter. A Psi Chi Library has
been established and it is contributing a great deal to the academic devel-
opment of the students. It is growing in number of volumes and the Depart-
ment feels it is serving a very useful purpose, not only for psychology
majors but students from other disciplines. It is manned by members of

the fraternity and has the assistance of a student work serving a
Librarian.
