Is Psy Greek to You?

[This text is machine generated and may contain errors.]

This symbol, WY, the Greek letter Psy, is
often used as an abbreviation for the word
SYCHOLOGY. To many students, the pro-
fession of Psychology is ~~all Greek.TT To
help familiarize students with the field, here
are answers to some questions high school
students frequently ask.

WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGY? Psychology is the
science which studies individual behavior,
draws conclusions from such study, and ap-
lies understandings gained in the service of
man.

WHERE DO PSYCHOLOGISTS WORK? In
schools and colleges; for federal, state and
local governments; for the Armed Forces; in
business and industry; and for private philan-
thropic, charitable, and research foundations.
Some are self-employed as clincians or con-
sultants in private practice.

WHAT DO PSYCHOLOGISTS DO? Some teach;

some provide counseling services; some help
with selection and training of industrial per-
sonnel, on-the-job adjustment of employees,
and increasing worker efficiency; some are
concerned chiefly with administering psycho-
logical tests, others with diagnosing difficul-
ties and providing therapy; some are scientific
researchers; some are engaged in such specia-
lized programs as the selection and training
of astronauts. There is a great variety in the
types of positions available for psychologists,
and the settings in which they may work.

WHAT IS THE OUTLOOK FOR EMPLOY-
MENT? Excellent, for the well-trained indi-
vidual. The number and types of positions are
increasing in number far more rapidly than they
can be filled. Opportunities for imployment
are not limited to any one geographic area

HOW DO I BECOME A PSYCHOLOGIST? First
one must earn a bachelors degree with a major
in psychology; then one must earn at least a
MasterTs Degree in psychology. Many jobs now
require a Ph.D. Degree in psychology and over
60% of all psychologists now have earned this
degree. Psychologists with Ph.D. Degrees, on
an average, earn two to three thousand dol-
lars a year more than do psychologists with a
MasterTs Degree. Most graduate students re-
ceive financial help from universities and other
sources, either in the form of part-time em-
loyment or in the form of fellowships and
scholarships.

WHAT DOES EAST CAROLINA COLLEGE
OFFER IN PSYCHOLOGY? ECC offers the
A.B. Degree with a major in psychology. Its
requirements include a background in the
liberal arts as well as preparation in psycho-
logy and a related minor field. The M.A. pro-
gram at ECC consists of one full school year,
in which course work is almost entirely in
sychology. The exact M.A. courses taken de-
ends on the field of psychology in which one
lans on working. Specializations at East
Carolina in the Department of Psychology
include, in addition to a MasterTs Degree in
General-Theoretical, a two-year program in
clinical, and a two-year MasterTs Degree in
School Psychology.

For the school year of 1963-64, over two
hundred-fifty undergraduates are majoring
in psychology. Also, approximately twenty-
five graduate students are enrolled. The
usual areas of psychology are included among
the fourteen staff members in the department.

Exciting plans for the future include a new
building (by school year 1964-65) with excel-
lent facilities for research and teaching. New
rograms are also planned.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH THE AB DEGREE
ALONE? Most positions directly related to
the field of psychology require the MA as the
minimum education. However, AB graduates
from ECC are working as social case workers,
interviewers in both government and industry,
and other similar fields. Many areas not con-
Sidered ~~psychologicalTT also attract psycho-
logy majors. For example, many employers
refer people with psychology backgrounds
for jobs in sales, personnel, public relations,
labor relations, the ministry and law.
