Th r o u g h countless ages has come the art of
knitting. Women have taken pride in their art until
knitting itself has become a sign of domesticity. Amid
flying needles, tea has been served, conversation made
in far corners of the earth. And now this age-old practice
of knitting has become the smartest of vogues.
t9Aprevue of a celebrated Parisian atelier - hand
knitted notes. After tea on the Riviena-
and again the trend. The' castle of a baro.ness at
Nuremberg-a stitch known to this aristocratic family
for centuries. An exclusive Palm Beach Club-fashion
leaders contribute. X.. -
WITH the revival of the hand knitting vogues and
the desire for lovely hand made things, comes the
demand for lovelier, smarter yam s-and someone to
advise and instinict in the art. Blount-Haiwey has anticipated
this and met the demand by installing a knitting
department, a complete range of Sudbury and Colleta
Yarns, and someone to teach the art of knitting. Mrs.
Hogan Gaskins, well known for her many beautiful
hand-made creations, is in tlie knitting department every
day 10:00 to 11:30 o'clock in the morning and 3:30 to
5:00 o'clock in the afternoon, and will give free advice
and insu-uctions. You are cordiallly invited in for consultation.

The honor of winning th e first
place to be al'otted on the 1936 U nited
States Olrmpic team fell to Dt lbert
Lamb, youthful MilwaOkee .'.pet'd
skater, whm he made the fastest
time in the SOO-m* ter final Olympic
tryouts.
Lamb camp dangfrously close to
not even competing in the final tfial
races for the Olympic team berths.
The Wlscon State committee si lected
four competitors to go to Mmneapoli.
s on the basis of total time for
aJ] events in the State trials. Lamb
finished fifth in the .scoring. Luckily
sameone called the com m itees at- _ . . .
tention to the fact th a t Wiscoasln
was emjtlod fo m-n candidates, so off
Lamb was sent alon* . i t h tlto team.
It wa.s a good thing th at he was,
for his showing in the .500-rnetcrs
cau.S(d Prank Kalteaux, chairm an
of, the Olympic committee, to comment
th at Lamb wa.s America's oub>
.standing Jiope for victory in the
sp'ed skating events next year.

Lamb .'kated i- heat in the 500-

original drawlngs, made under the
Europelan sy.stem of the only two
men in each heat, wlUidrew. He
proved that he diS not need a pacer
for his litme of 0:44 8 was only two

the w'orld's record.
On the* time ba.si.s Lamb finished

the veteran Allan Pou.s. of
Brooklyn, by one tenth of a .second.
Lamb's time of 2:37.7 was four .seconds

The Milwaukee .skater'.s chane.s of

in the coming year for he is only
twenty years old.
His physique Is ideal for skating-

crowding and pushing of huge fields
have in pa.st races annoyed Lamb
and prevented him from .showing
to advantage speed skating, and

for the Milwaukee .speedster.
wonder, then, that the Olympic
committee was over-joyed a t seeing
him skim over the ice all alone in
near record time,
Lamb first skated Into prom inence
in 1932 when he tied for th e Intermediate
State title. The following
year he was more impressive and at
18 became the youngest skater ever
to win the Wi.sconsin S tate cham pionship.
He did not do so well in 1934 when
the hug" fields cramped his style and,
shunted him into the background,
temporarily.
Partial credit for Del Lamb's ^ c .
cess on the ice must go to his broth-i
er Eugene, who started him in the
game. Eugene was quite a speed
skater In his day.
To Del'.s credit it must be reported
that he w'as wise enough to listen
to his brother's coun.sel and profit
from the latter's competitive experiences.
One thing the Ohmpic com m ittee
need have no concern over is the
matter of Lamb's condition between
now and the Olympic m eeting.

Last night, on the Rocky Mount

won a clc.se and hard fought game
from the Y. W. C. A. team . The
game was featured by S5purts of
good and bad play by each team.
The Ramblers took an early lead,
and at the half held a comfortable
margin. During the second half
the Y girls pulled up gradually and
m inuies very
cloie and excitinjj.
The game waS marked by many
fculs, each team losing two players
becau.se of too many infractions of
the rules.
Askew with 13 points, and Bunn
with 11, were the high .scorers for
the local.s. For Rocky M cunt, Burkey
was high .scorer w'ith 13 poin.

WRITE RANSOM NOTES

That hurt," he said miserably.
"1 am Indeed sorry," said Willy
Nilly. "111 put sqnie of my best Uni* , . i .

you In no lime."
So the old man sat in Willy Nilly's
house wKh liniment on his head
while WUlly Nilly thought to him-
.clf:
"AU m.v adhesive Is gone now. I'll
br.ve to get some more before I can
start attending to my ears. This trouble
has put me behind in my chorea,
too.
"I'm a foolish little inan with no
more backbone than an old winter
leaf. But then I'm afraid Christopher
may be at the back of all this."
"Now 1 think I'll put on my wig,"
.aid the old man after Willy Nilly
had thought he was going to sit with
him all day.
But as the man put on his wig and
tried to straighten it on his head the
.Iniment stuck to the wig.
"I've made a mess of it," said the
old man crossly.
"Let me have it," said Willy .Nilly.
"r il take it off carefully so the hairs
don't stick. You'll be all fixed up in
no time."
"1 hope so," sighed the old man.
"I hope 80, too," thought poor Willy
Nilly.
By MARY GRAHAM BONNER
,NCE again the old man was
wlthput his wig. Willy J^iljy
wiped off the liniment. Then he
vmt on some that was fresh so the
old man's head would feel better.
"Now," Willy Nilly announced,
"we'll have some lunch while that
dries and heals your head in no
time. It Is almost all right now,"
The old man decided the idea of
lunch was very pleasant. He ate,
thought Willy Nilly, as much for
lunch as If he had had no breakfast.
Not that Willy Nilly did not enjoy
entertaining, but he didn't care
much for the old man. He felt that
he would be a dangerous enemy,
and while Willy Nllljrdld not fear
enemies for himself, he did for his
animal friends.
After lunch Willy Nilly cleaned
the wig inside where the liniment
had stained it and, at last the old
man was ready to leave.
After he had gone Willy Nilly
sat down, exhausted. - There had
been a^straln about having him and
Willy "^Njlly was glad that Christopher
had not appeared.
He wondered where the crow
might be. He got up and went outside
his door and called:
