GALVESTON, Tex., Feb. 18th, 1897
Leaving Birmingham on the after~
noon of the 15th, atter a few hours
pleasantly spent in that city, our jour-
ney continued through the iron and
coke regions cf Alabama. Night soon
came on and nothing further could be
observed of the country until we were
well down in Mississippi next morning.
Here we had another reminder of
portions of North Carolina, the country
being almost exactly like that between
Newbern and Morehead City, nothing
much to be seen but s'im pine growth,
broom sedge and frog ponds. Over into
Lousiana and nearing New Orleans the
country partakes more ot a semi-tropical
nature and palms could be seen growing
wild in great profusion. For twenty.
odd miles before reaching the city the
railroad is built upon a trestle, that
portion of it extending entirely across;
Lake Ponchartrain being very ister-
esting and broken by nuimvera oi draw

The Disputed Racy,
The controversy has: arisen
concerning the decision of the dudges
in the 2.25 class race of Wednesday af-
ternoon in which Bird Bye and Tyro-
lese both claim to be winners has caused
quite a great deal of interest. There
are between $2,000 and $3,000: in the
hands of stake holders which cannot be
handed over until the race is finally de-
cided.
There are rumors to the extent that
the race will be re-rnn,.another that the

agai.st the payment of the purse to
Tyrese in whose favo? the Judges
decided the day of the race. In cage
