The Greatest Happiness Will Come
From Giving Happiness to
Others.

oWe must not allow ourselves te for-
got the true meaning of the Christmas
spirit, writes Edward W. Bok of oThe
Christmas That Lies Between, in the
~ December LadiesT Home Journal. o1t
will tring happiness to us just in pro-
portion as_we bring happiness to oth"
ets. To some the day will this year
bring other than happy thoughts or
memories. Sorrows are harder to bear
on festul days than at any other time.
But no sorruw should crush the Christ-
mas spirit from our hearts. It is not in
the amount that we do, or are able to
do, that we shall find happiness for
cureelves and for others. ~The sim plest
pleasures and acts ofiiimes make th®
hearts of others overflowing with hap
piness. To fail to do something be-
@ause you feel othat you annot do
mauch is wrong.. What seems ever so
trifling to you may make some little
heart sing all day long, which but tor
you unghi pass the day without a note
of happiness. DonTt grow impatient of
the Christmas myth or legend. Keep it
alive. God knows we have few enough
ideals in these investigating days of
eurs. Let us not disturb the Clirisimas
traditions. [tis a duty to ourselves to
Aeep this day as unlike auy other. And
we can only do this !y fanningTinto
fiiine the smouldering embers of the
Christus spirit, which is in every one
ef us. God implanted it there. It
was good that we shou'd have it, or
He would not have given it to us. In
childhood the fire. burned brightly
@ough within us; ix old age the liz bt
et Cliristmas will reflect in our faces
and our natures.

But in the meantime
We must keep the spirit alive, so that it
may low the warmer and _ softer in
Old age. Let us have an old time mer.
ry Christmas this year; a real, old-tash-
Joned, happy one. Let us make every-

body: forget that there is anything in

the world but good-tcllowship and hap
py laughter, To tie sick let us bring
Sorgettuloess of pain; to the sorrowful,
the sweet bali of consultion; t) the

we bring light to other eyes, color to
other caceks, happiness to other hearts,
we shail be happy ourselves. ~The

MESSAGE TO CHRISTIANS.

Bishop Cheshire Speaks True Words
Touching Christians,

Dear Brethren :
At this happy Christmas Season may
not put aside the things which unhap.
piy divide us, and with all respect, love
and christian humanity, speak from my
eart to yours ?

mem

Next Friday is Christmas Day. In
times past some good people have scru-
pled to recognize this day as our iordTs
birthday. But, leaving out all ques"
tlons with reference to the particular.
day of ChristTs birth and Bethl hem, aill
our people do recognize Christn.as as
bringing to mind that blessed and tun"
damental fact of christianity, the eom"
ing to.us of Him who is our Lord and
our Saviour. I have just been reading,
with great Interest, the oChristmas
number of the Biblical Recorder, |
wave uot seen this weekTs issu. s of th-
Presvyterian and Methodist papers,
but I doubt not th t they, tuo, contain
appropriate references to the season.
Ubristmmas, as a popular holiday and
festival, 1s one of the best established
vf our social institutions, aud to the
popular mind and heart it does recail
the birth of Jesus Christ our Master o:
the blessed Virgin,

The werd whici I would speak to all
wy chrisuan brethren, first, to taose
Who recognize me as over them in the
Lord, and then, with equal earnestness,
but with greater r spect and humility,to
those Why do not, if they will allow me
Lue privilege of thus addressing them, is
this:

Shall Christusas Day be sanctified
by the word of God, and by praye*
and praise, addressed to Him in His
iouse, by His people of all names and
of every kind, or shall it be wholly
given up to merely secular and sociai
lestivity ?

Our people will all keep Christinas in
Ought not christian
people to keep it as christians? Shall
we hot, first of all, keep thé feast tu
Him whose love provides the means ot
joy? And should not ail forms of
organized christianity seek for GodTs
blessing upon the day, by endeavoring
to teach all people to make the day
ho'y by public worship ? Du we not
41 teel the iow of this sanetitying and
restraining au. .vating influence upon
the popular ind und conscience, as
wellus for th» \..oper. expression ot
our uwn joy 1 the Lord ?

Christmas is a fact in our social life:
do we not need to make it a fact in our
religious lite ? :

1 do feel that I am in a special senge

all enjoyiag benefits of tbe happy
Christmas season. In our churchs
an! congregations we gladly welcome

| but we should still more rejoice, if, from
every pulpit where Christ is preached,
there could be proclaimed on Christmas
day the blessed news of His birth aud
of the good gitts He br.ngs for us, and
if tom every spire and tower the
Christmas bells should declare to the
thoughtless world that we are thus re-
jeicing in Him who brings us peace
from heaven,

We all long and pray for christian

people? .
Praying GodTs blessings upon you,
