Chairman Democratic Executive Com.

qt Woula b2 at Once a Marvel and
Affliction.

Candidate Russell has concluded his
speech-making campaign in the hill
country, and will now proceed to vent
his eloquence and give his attention to
the denizens of the eastern plain. Ne
didnTt set the hills on fire, and we ae
therefore, not apprehensive of any wide
spread of vonflagration in the low coute
try. Mr. Russell may b. hot at times,
but he is not hot enough to engender
universal hotuees, unless 1t is on the
other side, where, after hearing him,
the people realize more and more ihe
imperative necessity of deteating him
for the exalted and responsible position
to which he aspires, and unless all the
reports we hear be very much at fault,
that is what the thoughtful, serious,
conservative people of the State, whose
unemories go back to 1868, propose to
do. If, with the feeling among the
Democratic: masses, among Repabli-
cars who protest against the methods
by which they allege his nominaticn
was secured, and the widespread hor"
tility to him among the colored voters
of the State, and especially in the east
where his 1ecord and utterances are

of the day, and if he should be it, would

be one of the greatest afflictions..ever
put upon North Carolina. Wiiming-
