Work for Them.

We talked with several wer-
chants about the c ffect of FridayTs
big tovacco break upou their
sales, aud every oue said there
was a marked improvement. This
shows wh-re the merchants are
benefitted by the tobacco market.
Now can't they see that factories
paying out large sums weekly to
operatives wuald still farther im.
prove their sales?

A Pleasant Day.

The picvic out at the Henty
Brown faim, veer Mt. Pleasant,
on Fnday, was as occasion long
to be remembered by the atten-

they had an all arouud guod time.

dinner which was served

one and sufficient for even a larg-
er number uf people than were
present: A large platform was
provided fur the danc-rs and it
was made good use of all day. A
string baud from Robersonville
furnished music. The wanagers
deserve much credit for the excel
Manner in which they conduc
ted the picnic. Everything passed
rea pleasantly and in the best of

Some years since, - Dr. » now
the popular president of a flourish-
ing western college, was the pastor
of a congregation in an eastern city.
He was one day preaching with great
earnestness and, in defining his
position on the question at issue,
said: oIn the lang of the im-
mortal Luther, °
cannot do otherwise, God help"
He had not finished the familiar
quotation when, owing to the fact
that he was unconsciously on the}
very edge of the platform, he fell off
and down a distenee of about three |.
feet. .
He quickly picked himeeif up, and,

on entering the pulpit again, he said:
**God hélptag wieT Pon not change

my moral position, _ ~but I will take
my stand just a trifle farther from
the edge of the platform."

The sermon proceeded without any
further quc ation from the **hero of
