Description
Recording of concert entitled Beethoven and His Time, II. Beethoven and the Heroic. Concert begins with Beethoven's 12 Variations on the Theme "Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen" from "The Magic Flute" by Mozart, performed by Selma Gokcen, cello and John O'Brien, piano. Next, ECU history professor Bodo Nischan gives a lecture titled "The Age of Napoleon," and ECU English professor McKay Sundwall reads a stanza of Goethe's poem "Natur und Kunst," followed by a passage from Lord Byron's poem "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage," and describes how poetry and music relate to one another. After an intermission Sundwall reads Beethoven's "Heiligenstadt Testament," and Gokcen and O'Brien perform Beethoven's Cello Sonata No. 3 in A Major. Performed October 8, 1992.
