Federal Aviation agency reports that Souther Airways chartererd airliner has crashed at Kenova West Virginia it reportedly was carring the Marshall University football team, its coaching staff and several citizens. (1:43)

Early reports do not indicate the condition af those aboard. University spokesman for the plane a DC-9, was carrying 37 football players and AAA spokesman says the plane went down two miles left of the airport at Kenova in moderate rain and fog. (1:59)

The football team was returning from Greenville, North Carolina where it lost a 17-14 decision to East Carolina this afternoon. The FAA spokesman said the control tower at the airport lost contact with the plane at about 7:45pm Eastern Standard Time, about 15 minutes after it was due to land.

And this just in state police said there are quote, "apparently no survivors among the reported 68 passengers aboard and an undetermined number of crew". (2:57)

The whole community is indescribably shocked. My heart goes out to the relatives and loved ones of our players and our staff and the fans.

President Kennedy got assassinated, you just didnt believe it, it is still unreal to me right now as the airport most of the night. Just couldn't believe I still can't believe. (3:41)

Federal Aviation Administration investigators have found intact the DC nines flight recorder and onboard tapes of the crews radio conversations and may be able to figure out why the plane with an experienced pilot at the controls should have crashed into a hillside just short of the runway on its landing approach. The plane coming down and light rain and fog, apparently clipped the top of one hill in its path then pancaked into another. The accident the worst domestic air tragedy of the year, is also the worst involving an American athletic team. This flight, the round trip to Greenville, North Carolina, was the first time the Marshall team had flown to a game the season. On all previous games it had gone by bus. (4:23)

Marshal University in West Virginia is still in a state of shock today, following the terrible tragedy of last Saturday night's crash in the Chartered airline. 75 people died in the wreckage, the football team, the coaches and some prominent residents traveling with the team. Today at the hillside near Huntington, where the plane went down, investigators were picking their way through the mud, looking for clues. (5:36)

Aircraft came in here, over this hill to the left, it came across the road this highway you see traffic on over there runs north and south, State Route 75. The aircraft was making an approach of approximately 290 degrees in an easterly direction from west to east. Hits those trees on top of the hill up there, caused the aircraft to actually hit the ground out here in almost a straight down, nose first attitude. (6:39)

The messages of condolences have come in from around the world and Saturday night to Marshall University since the plane crash. They've come from Egypt, from Cairo and of course come from many, many other people but today they received a group of letters from a third grade class af Miller School in Huntington. Dear Marshall University, I know how sad you are I am very sad too. I liked all the guys, Joe Good number 33, was my friend. I feel terrible. They made me feel better. I heard them say the last game. We're going to win baby, and they won. (7:19)

With 7000 people at the Marshall field house last night for the memorial service. It was a collective grief, restrained most of the time but visible. The student council president said something is missing, we all feel it. They will feel it for some time to come in this university and in this town. (8:07)

Oh Lord, of all of us, you know how human we all are, and thus you do understand why we must be here, at this very hour. We know, that there will be no game today. The game has been called off by your summons of our friends, to yourself. But we are human and selfish and we must cry over their absence. (8:44)

That I feel that athletics has taught everyone that has ever participated in has to face adversity and come back up off the ground and go on to continued success. If there ever was an institution or a program that has this opportunity Marshall University has and I know that everyone will be watching us, and we'll share with us our common problems I've had calls from all over, indicating that they're willing to help in any way possible. And I know that this challenge, is a challenge that we are willing to accept. And I am sure that we will continue on and come out with the one thing that I realized that the people who will be involved with this program at this particular time, may not share in the victories. This does not mean that we are accepting a defeatist attitude. We're just saying that this particular time, these next four years, the athletes will be participating in this program will have a page in history of Marshall University and their particular athletic program, but their victories will be reflected in the years to come, and how well we do in the next four to five years will be how well Marshall University will continue to do in the years to come.
