Birthday celebration begins

Centennial kicks off with
students on the mall

ELIZABETH LAUTEN
ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR

The ECU centennial birthday
celebration will begin today on
the campus mall. Sponsored by
the SGA, the Alumni Association,
ECU Ambassadors, the Centennial
office and the Student Union, the
event takes place from 4 to 6 p.m.
Students are invited to come and
enjoy free subs, chips, drinks and
cupcakes. The event will also
include a magician, a balloon art-
ists and an ice sculptor. Guests
who attend the events will also
receive goodie bags. Live enter-
tainment will be provided by The
Dickens Band.

oThe band has played
in several of the Greek func-
tions and clubs downtown,? said
Karen Clough, assistant director
of the alumni program.

*The Dickens Band is well
liked by the student body. The Stu-
dent Union helped us find and book
them.:The committee putting on
the birthday party selected them,?
said Carolyn Thompson, coor-
dinator of Centennial Planning.
According to bandTs Web site, they
omix up classic R&B, classic and
modern rock, 80s retro, reggae,
old skool and current hip-hop, and
everything in between. From Bob
Marley to the Beastie Boys, Otis
Redding to Outkast, the Stones to
Snoop, Stevie Wonder to Sublime.?
The kick-off for the event will be
the unveiling of the ECU Centen-
nial commemorative Pepsi can,
as Pepsi is the official soft-drink
of ECU.

Painted fiberglass animals
like the Outer BanksT Winged
Horses and the Cows of Wis-
consin have become a huge craze
in numerous cities around the
United States. As a part of ECUTs
Pirate Fest celebration, the ECU
Alumni Association and the
Greenville Chamber of Com-
merce have teamed up to bring
ECU its very own version of these
decorated statues.

Many cities around the United
States have chosen to embellish
animals as a way to raise money
for charity, or to celebrate special
events in their hometowns. Run-
ning with these ideas, various
members of the ECU Centennial
Planning Task Force came up
with a public art project that they
felt would honor ECUTs 100th
birthday and at the same time
reflect Pirate Pride.

The task force decided that
instead of bringing in statues of

animals, which may not relate to |

the ECU pirate theme, they would
hold a contest asking artists to
submit sketches of pirates.

Receiving upwards of 60
entries, the university selected
Glen EureTs sketch of a pirate
holding a sword and wearing an
eye patch. Eure is a 75-year-old
ECU art school alumni and well-
known Nags Head artist.

EureTs drawings of a pirate
from the front, back and side
angles have been sent to oCow-
painters,? the Chicago based
company responsible for creat-
ing the molds for more than 160
exhibitions of this kind around
the United States.

oWe did a call for entries and
now we are having a prototype
made by Cowpainters in Chicago,
Ill., they should arrive as white
fiberglass in their natural state,
from there weTll have artists and
sponsors create the next leg of
this project,? said Carolyn Brown

will be Magnolia Belles making
their debut. The Belles are an

sored by the Alumni Associa-
tion,? said Clough. oThey will be
singing the national anthem
and happy birthday to ECU.?
oThe birthday party was amazing
last year, and I canTt wait to see the
alumni association top if off this
year, it should be a great event and
tons of fun,? said Student Union
Vice President Casey Verburg.

tion is inside Mendenhall.

Class Officers work with students

SGA Class Officers talk with students in Mendenhall Student.Center to discuss goals and upcoming events.

Act as first line of
communication between
students and SGA

GENERRA CORNWELL
STAFF WRITER

The purpose of SGA rep-.

resentatives is to participate in
decisions affecting the student
body and primarily to act in the
best interests of the student body.

Every class has a president and
aclass council, which can include up
to nine students. The senior class
president Brandy Sherrer came into
office after Nadia Payne resigned.

oMy goals for the senior class
are to prepare for the senior class
gift, which is a benefit dinner
which will be at the end of April.
I also want to raise money for the
senior scholarship endowment. I
want to get a professor from every
department to nominate a student
for the outstanding student award,
which will be given out at the end of
the semester to acknowledge their
achievements. Another one of my
goals is to work with the Alumni
Association and keep in contact
with them,? said Sherrer.

When asked what she does
that directly benefits the senior
class she stated, oI do workshops
to help interested seniors with dif-
ferent ideas, for example, financing
and budgets, networking, Just real
worldT things. I just want to be
visible to the senior class at school
events, like games. I am also open
to student ideas to take them to the
higher officials.?

Eka Isangedighi, senior
family and community. ser-
vices major, expressed her feel-
ings about being invited to
meet her senior class president.

oT do not feel like she has done
anything for our class. The semes-
ter is almost over and she Just now
sent an e-mail about coming out to
meet her; we are about to graduate,
why should we care to meet her
now?? said Isangedighi.

Kelly Shelton is the junior class
president for the 2006 " 2007 aca-
demic year.

oMy main goal is the Success
for Life Workshop. They include
two real world workshops. One is
in March, which is the networking
workshop, and the other one is in
April, which is the finances work-
shop,? said Shelton.

When asked what she does
on campus to help the junior
class she stated, oThe Success
for Life workshops and trying
to build up SGA and get more
student involvement especially
between the junior class and SGA.?

Sherrer and Shelton both have
plans to work for Service N.C.,
which is a week long event that
competes against other universities
doing different service projects.

Since the sophomore class
president resigned, SGA has been
looking for an officer to fill the
position. For another: president
to be selected, the SGA president
has to select two names and do
background checks for eligibility.
Next, the student Congress votes
to elect someone.

The freshman class president
for the 2006 " 2007 academic year
is Patrick Sebastian.

oMy goal for this year is to build
unity within the freshman class, I
did this by supporting the Support
for Life Workshops. I also go to
events to put a face with the officer.
They elected us to work for them
and we just want to serve every

When asked what he thinks is
most important in being the fresh-
man class officer, Sebastian stated,
oHaving good communication. I
get about 10 to 15 e-mails a week,
with people asking me questions. I
answer them all within a few days.
You have to be on their level. ITm
just like them. ITm no more expe-
rienced than they are, I am right
there with them.?

Brent Richards, freshman
sports studies major, said he was
unsure what his class officer did.

oI have seen him around
a few times but I never knew
exactly what he does for the fresh-
man class. I know that there are
always a lot of activities being
held on campus but I usually
donTt know which organization
is sponsoring it,? said Richards.

Although Richards was unsure
of his class presidentTs role, other
freshmen feel differently.

oI really appreciate the effort
of the class officers to com-
municate with students,? said
freshman, hospitality man-
agement major, Taylor Suttle.

SGA members are seeking
individuals to serve on the class
councils for every class, with the
exception of the freshman coun-
cil, which is already full. The
class council is a vital compo-
nent since they help improve the
lines of communication between
the SGA and the student body.

Michael Harris, freshman coun-
cilman, stressed the importance of
getting involved on campus early on.

oIt is extremely important for
freshman to get involved their first two
years of college because it helps them to
become aware of their surroundings.?

Tax tips

Receive a refund in
less than 10 days

CARMIN BLACK
STAFF WRITER

The two most popular meth-
ods for filing taxes are e-filing or
a newer service called Free File.
Free file was first introduced in
2003; itTs a method available for
any taxpayer who earns less than
$52,000 a year. In fact, last year
alone more than 72 percent of tax-
payers qualified for this service.

One of the main reasons Free
File has become so popular is that
by using this service, taxpayers
can receive their refund within as
little as 10 days.

oMost students should really
consider e-file, because if they
have all their information together
e-file is a great way to do their
taxes, it will walk them through
the form and if they qualify they
could get their refund within 10
days,? said Mark Hanson, field
media relations specialist for the
Internal Revenue Service.

Hanson made it clear that
even though e-filing is the easiest
option, anyone using their com-
puter needs to be especially careful
when they are when punching in
personal information.

Hanson Tsaid anyone filing
needs to pay special attention to
things like typing in the correct
digits on social security numbers,
putting in a new last name when
married or rechecking any calcula-
tions for simple math errors.

Besides double-checking for
mistakes, many students who
are filing for the first time say
they would prefer to use the
Internet but are worried that their
personal information may not be

| totally secure.

oL know that filing online is
the easiest option, but the last
thing I need is to fall prey to
some ridiculous tax scam,? said
Cameron Todd, junior elementary
education major.

What Todd is actually refer-
ring to is something Mark Hanson
calls a ophishing scam.? A phishing
scam is when a person who filed
their taxes online gets an e-mail
or a phone call supposedly from
the IRS, telling them that some of

Whose tomb
is 1t, anyway?
How not to go about a discovery

YAZID FINN
OPINION WRITER

Anyone watch the Discovery channel on Sunday?
Maybe catch James CameronTs newest documentary?
Possibly hear claims that the tomb of Jesus was dis-
covered? While the material that CameronTs docu-
mentary covers is nothing new, allow me to bring
everyone up to speed with a quick review.

First we must travel back in time twenty seven
years. Construction is taking place in a suburb of
Jerusalem when workers stumble upon an ancient
cave in which numerous tombs are found. Workers
immediately call for archeologist to the scene and
the tombs are then studied, attempting to translate
the names of the buried. Time passes, but in the end,
the names are discovered and among them are Mary,
Mathew, Jesua and Judah, son of Jesua.

But wait, James Cameron, Jesus rose from the
grave, as it is the cornerstone of the Christian faith.
His body was buried by Joseph of Arimathea at what
is now known as the Church of the Holy Sepulcher
and his tomb is empty to show this! Are you trying
to.claim that JesusT remains are actually in one of the
ancient coffins discovered in 1980? What evidence
do you have to support this assertion? Well... let
us take a look.

CameronTs most compelling reasoning seems
logical enough, as he looks towards forensics and
DNA comparisons made between the tombs. Well as
modern day prosecutors and defense attorneys can

_ attest, DNA can only prove so much and this case is

no different. The only thing proven is that everyone
buried in the tombs are related, as no outside DNA
sample can compare to those in the tombs. CameronTs
DNA evidence begins to look like circular reasoning
as his claim implies the truth of... well, his claim.

The next biggest counter to CameronTs claim
attacks the names of the very people he believes to
document. Sure archeologists translated the names
of the tomb to Jesua and Mary, but what does this
show? Only that the caskets of someone named Jesua
and Mary was unearthed. But are they the Jesua and
Mary as described in the New Testament? I sure do
not think so, as those names were among the most
common for the time period. Records discovered for
the time show during the period that Jesus lived,
at least 200 people were named Joseph, 150 people
were named Judah, 70 were named Mary and finally
over 90 others named Jesus were alive. ThatTs like
excavating a graveyard one thousand years from now
and describing to someone that the tombs of Smith,
Johnson and Brown had been discovered. You'd only
have discovered the tombs of people carrying the
most common surname of the point in time.

Now I am covering the scientific and statistical
aspects of the documentary and will not delve into
the Biblical aspects of this case, as I am truly not an
expert on Christian teachings. However from the
claims arising against Cameron from more scholarly
perspectives, more are dismissing the documentary
as an attempt to gain publicity and, like the downfall
of all men, make money. Cameron stood to make
not only a profit for filming the unearthing of the
tombs and selling the documentary to Discovery

(for unannounced millions), but from future DVDT

sales as well.

The issue is a controversial one and as experts
join both sides of the fray, things are sure to get
heated as more claims and counterpoints are pre-
sented for both sides. Is the Titanic director attempt-
ing to osink Christianity? as some believe, or truly
hoping to learn about the past? Is money on the
forefront of his mind, or the truth?

Only God knows and time will tell.

of North Korea.

At first, the disarmament of a powerful and
volatile nation seems very desirable; however, there
is much debate over the new deal and the possibility
of onuclear blackmail.?

The terms of the deal state that North Korea will
receive a total of one million tons of oil, worth nearly
$250 million dollars, in exchange for the complete
disarmament of their nuclear programs: _

It seems, to me, as ifthe United States is treating
this deal as simply as a kindergartner would trade
crayons. ITll give you my blue for your red. However,
I should hope that the two governments would give
a deal of this magnitude more consideration than a
pair of kindergartners.

My first and most important concern is this"
what happens when the United States and other
governments can no longer supply the fuel demanded
by North Korea to continue the disarmanient of their
nuclear programs? What use is the deal if it is only
for the short run?

The world is on the verge of change. Many hos-
tile governments, including North Korea and Iran,
are within reach of complete nuclear power. There
is no doubt that drastic measures should be taken

to try to ensure safety of the country or devastation

is likely to prevail. I applaud the United States for
being one of the first nations to step up and try to
invoke change, but at the same time, a deal like this
seems more controversial than beneficial.

oThe United States government should use their
resources to develop a plan that will suffice in the
long run. We should also be wary of jumping into
very costly deals with other nations that have proven
themselves untrustworthy.

Is President Bush trying to hastily put a good
stamp on his presidency before it is over? I guess
only the future will tell.

would approach her and ask her for a little help clean-

that causes the mess, but I am pretty much guaranteed
to get an attitude back. What is the best way to ask for

Dear Sick,

Sometimes, the longer you allow something to go
on unaddressed, the more ofan issue it will become (for
you) and the more acceptable this action becomes to the
person thatTs doing it. It sounds like that might be the
case for you and your roommate. Perhaps it's gone on
for so long that she doesnTt think sheTs doing anything

of the way, especially if you're thinking there might be
a little confrontation. If you tell her that you need for

her space to be cleaner, she may or may not listen, and»

if it isnTt your common space, it may not be as easy.to

put your foot down and respectfully demand. Explain:
that you aren't trying to be a witch but youd really.
appreciate some help in getting things done around

the apartment or dorm room, whatever the case may
be, and that itTs not fair to you that you have to live in
an environment that isnTt as clean as you like. Perhaps
if you explain that you'd like to make a deal with her
(i.e.-sharing the chores), she may take to that more
readily, also.

Basically, what I'm saying is, there may not be a way
to get her to keep your living space as clean as you'd

like at this point, but thereTs always a way to change.

things, if push comes to shove. I hope she hears you
and respects your needs.

Good luck,

Disrespect in class

ALEX LAROCCA
OPINION WRITER

I remember a time when hats, gum and even
drinks were against not only the teacher's rules but
schoolsT, I think we can all remember this time as high
school. We would pass notes in class, talk casually
with a teacher and at times get into some disputes
with them. This was a time when you would fear your
teacherTs wrath and when you would never think to
talk during class expecting to get away with it or
disobey the basic rules of the school, which some are
rules of common courtesy. So how is it that when we
enter college those rules which we were raised on

_ get erased?

In college we are given the freedom to wear hats,

_ chew gum, drink and eat almost anything we want

in class. As college wears on we forget that there
was ever a time where we couldn't do these things,
but the one rule I always will remember is to shut
up in class.

I think everybody can relate to this problem,
and in some cases I am sure you were the problem.
I think I finally flew over the edge last week in my
microeconomics class. This is a class that has no
attendance policy and if you wanted to you could
possibly get away with barely ever coming to class.
So, much to my surprise I was sitting in class last
week, around the middle to front area to get away

from the people who talk in the back. As I sat there I
* couldn't believe it but I heard some whispering: o.....

Rests Shee. next week...? I assumed that I
was too close to the front for them to continue talk-
ing and it would stop soon. To my dismay it didnTt...
ever. They literally talked the entire class, not only
that they even threw in the comical note from time
to time oWhat is she talking about? I have no idea
what is going on in this class.?

Really?! Oh wow that was a huge surprise to me
and everyone else who heard you. This class has no
attendance policy and yet these two people made it a
point to catch up in the middle of class.

I realize this is an extreme, but I think everyone
knows I am not the only one with a story to tell.
My roommate recently told me one of the most dis-
respectful stories I have ever heard. He was in his
night class and it had already begun. Around five to
10 minutes into the class a girl pops in talking.on
her cell phone. Amazingly she continues to talk while
entering the class while the teacher is talking. oUhh
excuse me?? the teacher says. oHuh? Oh. Hey I gotta
go I am in class, J will talk to you later.? What if the
teacher had said nothing? I wonder how long she

- would have talked or not noticed she was in class.

I guess overall, students canTt really do anything
about this. I am just wondering how professors have
any tolerance for these kinds of actions. I thought
college professors would bite off your head for even
disagreeing with them. I never would have thought
I could talk during all of class. All I can really say
is that I just want everyone to shut up in class and
just not come if you really feel the urge to open your
mouth to anyone but the teacher.

Casual sex among
college students

LEIGH CARTER

College-aged students often
have numerous relationships in
a short period of time, allowing
themselves to meet a variety of

people but not forming romantic
attachments with each one. This
situation can lead to the practice
of having casual sex or sexual
activities outside the context
of a romantic relationship that
consist of a range of informal
sexual encounters.

While many students consider
this to be a common practice

oPeople come to college to

people they want to be with,?
said Tara Grissom, freshman
political science major oYou canTt

ferent things and get to know

While creating strong bonds

several aspects that each individ-
ual must consider before making
the decision to be sexually active
at this period in their lives.

oMany students are careless

when it comes to the practice of
safe sex,? said registered nurse
Donna Turner. oThis can lead to
the contraction of sexually trans-
mitted diseases and unwanted
pregnancies that can affect the
rest of your life.?

The fact that many college-
aged students often drink in social
settings is also a factor associated
with the practice of casual sex.

oBeing under the influence
of alcohol lowers inhibitions one
might normally feel when consid-
ering having a sexual encounter,?
Turner said. oStudents often make
poor decisions at these times with-
out thinking of the consequences
that may arise after the night has

A study done in a recent pub-
lication of the Journal of Sex

lege Students? with a sample of 404
undergraduate students at a large
public university in the south-
eastern United States shows that
more than half of the participants

practice of casual sex.

oIn general casual sex is associ-
ated with depression, etc. However,
often it is a symptom of esteem
or other issues rather than a
root cause,? said Associate Com-
munication Professor Dr. John
Howard. oThe major negative
impact of casual sex for those
people is they are often seeking
validation that, by definition, can
only be temporary.?

The study from the Journal of
Sex Research also concludes that
college-aged women who have a
history of casual sex tend to feel

Professor ignites passion for writing

Professor profile:
Timm Hackett

JESSICA DUNLOW

~ Timm Hackett is ready to take
on the freshmen entering ECU to
teach them that writing is very
important for every major and
every person. For those students
who donTt enjoy writing, Hackett
may convert you, and for those
who already have a passion for the
pen will just get an opportunity to
perfect their art.

"Before graduating with a mas-
terTs degree from ECU, Hackett
received a Bachelor of Arts from
UNC Greensboro. The first classes
that Hackett teaches each semes-
ter are ENGL 1100 and 1200. He
claims that 1200 is his favorite to
teach because oeveryone has to
take it and it is much more than
a prerequisite,? since every major
requires some writing abilities
and everyone will have to write a
paper at some point in their col-
lege careers.

Hackett believes that there is
much more to a student/professor
relationship than merely meeting
in the classroom. Former student,
Michaelina Antahades visits his
classes at the beginning of each
semester to talk about course
requirements and her personal
experience in the class.

oAs a freshman itTs hard to
know how to interact with pro-
fessors, Hackett made himself so
available to all of his students out-
side of class time,? said Antahades.

Hackett to remember some of
his favorite ECU moments. His
first memory was when he was
attending UNCG, and drove to
Greenville with some of his fra-
ternity brothers for Halloween.
Talk about a first impression.
Frankly, it ofrightened? him, but
he had a great time. His second
favorite memory happens several
times each semester. It sounds a
bit cliché, but it still excites him
when a student understands that
they are going to have to spend

time writing, regardless of their
major and year.

Hackett received the award
for Outstanding Professor for
2005-2006 after being nomi-
nated by a former student from
the Department for Disability
Support Services.

Hackett was a brother in Pi
Kappa Phi fraternity at UNCG
and fully supports Greek life; in
fact, he is the current academic
advisor to his younger brothers
here at ECU.

I asked him what his opinion
was of the scandal regarding

the removal of 23 members of
Delta Zeta sorority, and he
revealed his hope that the situa-
tion could be cleared up without
damaging the reputation of the
Greek system.

Currently, Hackett is work-
ing on a semi-fictional historical
novel about the 1917 jazz era
and the prostitutes that resided
around New Orleans. It should
be a significant landmark in his
writing career.

A monastic

way of life

_ ITm finally settled into
the routine of it all

ELIZABETH LAUTEN
ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR

Recap: ITm now into my final
week living the life of a monk
for my RELI 5000 class. So far,
I haveT experienced everything
from dietary changes, to silent
days, to chanting with my peers.
This truly unique experience has
changed me in more ways that I
ever could have anticipated.

oJust four more days to go?
"the constant thought going
through my head, as ITm keenly
aware of how many days I have
left until I can finally enjoy a
caramel macchiato from my
beloved Starbucks again. But
really, ITm not complaining about
the situation"at least not any-
more. This whole experience has
actually become a way of life. I
donTt have to think about doing
all the little things anymore,
I just do them. I have always
heard if you do something for
about a month it becomes routine
and I guess that really is true.
The hour plus that I spend in
meditation, reading and journal-
ing every morning has become
a nice way to get away from
the world. In dealing with the
chaos of senior year, this proj-
ect seems to be the only thing
keeping me grounded.

I hosted a dinner for all of
my friends this past weekend. I
created for them, all of the dishes
I have been eating the past three
weeks. ITm not usually known
for my cooking abilities, but
everyone seemed to enjoy them-
selves. In fact, most of them
were surprised just how much
I actually had to cut out of my
diet and I think they were able to
appreciate what ITve been doing a
little bit more.

I spent Monday in silence
once again. I enjoyed the
excuse to not talk or have to
explain things to people. Maybe
itTs because my life is so hectic
right now, but I like feeling as
though I can disconnect from the
world sometimes. Monday was
no exception.

Again, tomorrow evening, I
will be going to my professorTs
house with other participants
in the Monastic Project. There
we will be chanting and watch-
ing a movie. Our first session
at his house was unreal. It was
something that I didnTt expect
and ITm pretty sure tomorrow

_ 1s going to be even more intense
than before, since we're further
into the project.

Defensive ae
Khalif Mitchell drops
the Carolina blue

JARED JACKSON
STAFF WRITER

Khalif Mitchell walked across
the turf at the Pirates football prac-
tice complex with a gigantic smile
that makes his presence heavily
felt among the other players. The
6-foot-6, 320-pound transfer from
the University of North Carolina
couldn't be any happier.

Mitchell, a Virginia Beach
native who didnTt start playing
football until his junior year of
high school, started two games
for the Tar Heels as a freshman,
recording 15 tackles [4.5 which
were for loss], 1.5 sacks and one
forced fumble. As a sophomore in
2005, he tallied 13 tackles, two
fumble recoveries, and four quar-
terback hurries.

Perhaps MitchellTs biggest
contribution to the North Caro-
lina program came on Oct. 9,

2004 as the UNC defense lined

up against rival N.C. State on
its own one-yard line. As Jay
Davis took the snap and handed

off to T.A. McClendon, Mitchell *

burst through the WolfpackTs
front seven and hit McClendon in
midair forcing a fumble and seal-
ing a Tar Heel win. oThe Play? as
itTs referred to is one of the most
significant in the North Caro-
lina football programTs history.

oOh man, I remember that play
like yesterday? Mitchell exclaimed
with laughter

oThereTs one thing on the Car-
olina board; itTs still there today
because I wrote it in permanent
marker,? said Mitchell. oIt said, if
you play hard then you will win?. I
put oif you believe you will win?.

oJ just went out there.and said
to myself theyTre not going to
score, and it didnTt matter whether
it was me or the guy across the
field, they're not going to score,?
said Mitchell as he recalled the
play he is most remembered for.
oI just believed we were going to
win. I didnTt even know he fumbled,
I just knew he didnTt cross the line
because I took two steps up and
thatTs all I needed.?

Mitchell appeared to be on the...

verge of greatness, but shortly

before the 2006 season former
UNC head coach John Bunting
issued a statement announcing
that Mitchell was no longer part
of the team.

oHe will not be with us this
fall,? Bunting said according to
the statement, without providing
the reason for MitchellTs depar-
ture. oKhalifTs a good kid who has
a lot of potential both on and off
the field.?

Whilé rumors stirred around
Chapel Hill and Internet message
boards all across the region, Mitch-
ell disappeared without a trace.

oI want to say factually, I didnTt
get dismissed from Carolina,?
Mitchell stated. oI left Carolina. It
Just wasnTt for me anymore. I just
felt like I needed a change.?

Mitchell said a lot of thought
went into the decision.

oI talked to my family about q

it, I made sure I took a lot of time.
to think about it,? said Mitchell. oI

love Carolina; I still love Carolina.

I was there for two years so I took

time to think about it. When I

thought about it, it was the right

thing to do.?

While Mitchell dyentually
found his way to ECU, that wasnTt
always the plan.

oI was actually about to go to
Arkansas,? Mitchell said. oI had
a good relationship with coach
[Houston] Nutt.

Mitchell hesitates before
revealing why he didnTt end up
with the Razorbacks.

oWhen it came down to aca-
demic credits, I had done a lot of
schoolwork at North Carolina.
When the credits transferred
over to Arkansas, they wouldnTt
have transferred over to get me
the amount of credits that ITd
worked for.

Mitchell said that.coach Nutt
advised him not to come to Arkan-
sas because of the credit situation.
So Mitchell looked for a second
opinion from a couple of trusted
friends and mentors. He spoke
to his former Hargrave Military
Academy coach.

Finally he seeked advise from
close friend Marcus Hands. Hands

ois.a ECU. defensive lineman. who .

went through a very similar situ-
ation as Mitchell.

oI talked to my.coach from
Hargrave, then the next thing you
know I talked to Marcus [Hands]

Mitchell was a defensive force for the Heels.

and the guys,? said Mitchell. oI got
to talking to the coaches and the
next thing you know I came here
[ECU] and ITm loving it.

One person that certainly isnTt
upset with MitchellTs decision to

transfer to ECU is Pirates Head -

Coach Skip Holtz. At a pre-spring
football press conference, the
third. year head coach mentioned
Mitchell as player to specifically
lodk out for.

oHe plays with a passion, an
excitement, an enthusiasm and
emotion. He plays the game the
way itTs supposed to be played,?

said Holtz. oHe plays it and heTs all ©

heart. ITm really excited; I think he
is one of the guys that has a. chance
to make a real splash this year.?

After transferring, Mitchell
has learned that Coach Holtz is
totally different from what coach
Bunting was like during his tenure
at UNC.

oCoach Bunting was a great
guy,T Mitchell said of his former
coach. oHe was very, very different;
heTs from the NFL, so obviously the
coaches in the NFL are a lot more
stern; more business friendly.?

oCoach Holtz is more of..a_

friend to people. If I catch coach
Holtz walking outside I might
go jump on him or something.
You know I couldn't do that with
coach Bunting because he is more

Pirates extend winning
streak to three

JOSEPH MURPHY
STAFF WRITER

The ECU womenTs tennis team
pulled out a 4-3 victory against
the previously unbeaten Coastal
Carolina Chanticleers Friday, Feb.
23, and defeated the Wofford Terri-
ers 5-2 last Saturday morning. The
Pirates prevailed in both matches

despite nagging injuries and ill-

nesses. The victories improved the
Pirates record this season to 11-5
and dropped the Chanticleers to 6-1
and the Terriers to 1-5.

oWe played hard, were beat up
a little bit and were not playing
our best tennis,? said Pirates Head
Coach Tom Morris. oEverybody
played hard, maybe not well, but
they played hard.?

The Pirates started out the

match against Coastal Carolina by "

winning the doubles point with wins
by the tandems of Luiza Borges with
Mireia Gol, and Alex Smith with
Brooke Walter. The doubles point
made the difference, as the teams
split the six singles matches.

In singles play, Borges defeated
Coastal Carolina's Amy Pazahanick
(6-0, 4-6, 6-1) and Varinia Soler?
defeated Sofie Ahlberg (4-6, 7-6,
6-2) for crucial three set victories.
The other Pirate singles victory
came from Gol who defeated Sarize
Coetzee (7-5, 6-3).

Morris applauded SolerTs come
from behind victory after the match.

oSoler lost the first set and was
just battling in the whole second set,
but she got through it and [won] the
tiebreaker and really opened a door
for us [by winningT] the third set.?

Against the Terriers the Pirates
doubles duos of Borges with Gol and

holds court at home

Soler with Anca Dumitru swept the
Terriers to earn the doubles point.
Singles victories by Gol, Borges and

Brooke Walter clinched the win for

the Pirates.

The team showed remarkable
perseverance by defeating a quality
opponent like Coastal Carolina.

oAbout half the team is
struggling with something, in
terms of injuries or illness,? said
Morris. oItTs always a challenge
with Coastal, you know they're
going to play well... they have a
good, strong team thatTs going
to fight hard. Usually the team
that fights hardest gets a little
lucky and gets the win, and that
was us today.?

The wind blew especially hard
during the Coastal Carolina match
on and clearly effected play.

oIt affects some playerTs games
more than others, but nobody plays
well in the wind, thatTs why it is
so important to fight and not let
it bother you and keep focusing,?
Morris said. oNobody likes play-
ing in the wind, you'd much rather
play in the cold than the wind, but
it affects both teams.?

The womenTs tennis team is
now in the midst of a 12-day break
from competition. Their next match
is Thursday March 15 at South
Carolina State. The time away from
competition comes at a sou time
for the team.

oWe've played an awful lot
of tennis up to this point,? said
Morris. oNow we have a little bit of
a break where we can really practice
and focus.?

The Pirates loaded schedule to °

this point in the season is evidenced
by the fact that they have already
played twice as many matches as
Coastal Carolina and Wofford
at this point in the season. The
team hopes to use the time off to

Improve in practice and recover

from injuries.
oHopefully we can get some
good practice in the next few weeks,?

Morris said. oWere going to use that |

time to get healthy and improve.?

about business and serious,? said.
Mitchell. oI can just come out
here and relax and relate to coach

[Holtz] a lot better. He under-

stands that I came from Carolina.

He understands that there is a lot

of tension since [the teams are]

close. So he just made the process

a lot easier.?

Mitchell had to sit out last year
due'to transfer rules and considers
it a blessing.

oI had a chance to try out
different moves, try out different
scenarios,? Mitchell said of using
the redshirt time to his advantage.
oI started loving practice. It was
the only time I could put on pads,
so I fell in love with practice. It

showed me how to polish up my ~

skills and be a better player.?
When he returns to the field for
the 2007 season, Mitchell wants to
prove to his new, as well as old
coaches, that he can bounce back.
oMy personal goals for the
season are just to take all the
coaching ITve learned from both
coach Browning over at Carolina
and coach Thompson over here at
East Carolina and just show both -

_ of those-guys:that ITm. the: type of:

player that when you coach me
ITm going to learn it, go ahead
and get it right, and polish up on
it,? Mitchell said. oThe one.thing

| want people to gain from me, if

Now he is vying for a spot on a crowded line.

they can say something, is that ohe
was resilient against odds.?

The Tar Heels will make their
way to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium
for the first time since 2003 on
Sept. 9.

While having thought about
the clash since transferring from
UNC, Mitchell banished the
thoughts from his mind as soon
as spring practice began.

oI dreamt about it everyday
until today,? Mitchell said on the
opening day of spring practice.
oTT'm like everybody else now; ITm
not redshirting anymore so I have
to worry about Virginia Tech
first. ThatTs still a rivalry for me
because ITm from Virginia Beach,
so thatTs the oboys? I worked
against [in high school]. ITm just
taking it a game at a time.?

Mitchell added that thereTs no
question he is looking forward to
playing some of his former team-
mates.

oWhen Carolina comes
around I'll tell you how I
feel about that,? he said.

And with that, Mitchell walks
off the turfin the chill of the early
spring night and is finally exactly
where he wants to be; wearing the
purple and gold.

Pirates pick up midweek
win over Aggies?

Neitz improves record
after fanning four

(SID)"ECU sophomore Ste-
phen Batts collected a pair of hits,
scored and drove in a run, and
senior Jason Neitz fanned 4-of-7
batters he faced as the Pirates
picked up a midweek win against

in-state foe N.C. A&T, 7-4 inside

Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Neitz, who improved to 2-0 on
the year, came in to relieve starter
Bailey Daniles in the top of the
fifth with two outs and the bases

loaded. The crafty lefty struck -

out Joe McIntyre on four pitches,
getting the Pirates (8-6) out of

. the jam.

Daniels worked 4 2/3 innings,

allowing one run on four hits with °

five strikeouts and three walks.
Brett Butts and Josh Ruhlman
combined for one shutout inning
before giving way to Mike Flye,

who faced four batters, giving up

three runs on three hits. Closer
Shane Mathews notched his fourth
save of the year after working a
scoreless ninth inning.

For the Aggies (2-8), John
Primis dropped to 0-2 on the
season after working 7 1/3
innings. He allowed five runs (two
earned) on four hits, while walk-
ing four and striking out three on
117 pitches.

The Pirates pushed three
runs through in the bottom of
the third to take an early 3-0
lead. Corey Kemp started off the
inning when he reached base on
a throwing error by Nick Mayo,
which advanced Kemp to second.
After David Forbes followed Kemp
with a walk, Ryan Wood reached
on another Aggie throwing error,
which scored Kemp from second.
Harrison Eldridge scored Forbes
from third on a ground out to
second base. The Pirates scored
their final run of the inning when
Dale Mollenhauer singled up the
middle scoring Wood.

N.C. A&T scored its initial
run in the top of fifth inning when
Mayo doubled to left-center and
scored Neil Rosser to put the game
at 3-1. Rosser reached first after

being struck by a Bailey fastball.
Lester Rivenbark singled to third
base moving Rosser to third set-
ting up the run.

ECU added another run in
the bottom of the sixth inning,
extending the lead to 4-1. Hen-
derson singled up the middle,
stole second base and crossed the
plate on Stephen Batts single to
left field.

Ryan Tousley, Kyle Roller
and Kemp each collected hits in
the bottom of the eighth inning
that scored runs to push ECUTs
lead to 7-1. Mollenhauer walked
to lead off the frame, stole second
and scored on TousleyTs single to
center. After Tousley got caught
stealing third, Batts singled to
left, stole second and scored on
RollerTs double to right field.
Kemp capped off the scoring
with a single to left that plated
Roller.

The Aggies plated three runs
in the top of the ninth inning

pulling within three, 7-4, before

Mathews came in to close the
game.

ECU will continue its home
stand this weekend when they
host No. 6 Cal State Fullerton in
a three game series. First pitch
Friday night is scheduled for 5
