George Gardner was the longtime Fire Chief of Greenville, his wife was my 3rd grade teacher at Agnes Fullilove School, which was adjacent to the area fire station which also had a training tower located behind the station. Mrs Gardner was always good at adding items into the curriculum, such as the importance of Fire and rescue, we had numerous field trips to the fire department. During some of the early space exploration launches/missions she had me bring my then state of the art 9 transistor portable radio to school, I listened to the broadcast in the cloakroom, and reported to the class when significant events occurred.
