Description
Three interviews which concern all aspects of Johnetta Webb Spilman's life and career. Spilman was a native of Chowan County and moved to Greenville, N. C. in 1916 to teach school. She married J.B. Spilman, treasurer of East Carolina College, and subsequently became assitant treasurer of the college. She was involved in politics and served in a number of leadership roles in political and civic associations including: vice-chairman of the N.C. Unemployment Compensation Commisstion (1936-1941), director of a resident hall for WAVES in Washington, D.C. (1941-1942), manager of the Greenville Employment Security Commission (1942-1944), executive director of the Pitt County T.B. Association (1950-1957), and director of the N.C. Mental Health Association (1957-1958). She has also been vice-chairman of the N.C. Democratic State Executive Committee and coordinator of the Council on the Aging. Interviewer: Donald R. Lennon.
