The dedication ceremonies of the stadium took place at halftime and this is the sound of that.

Dr. Leo Jenkins [0:07]
Ladies and gentlemen, again, I want to welcome you to the James S. Ficklen Memorial Stadium. I want to present Governor Terry Sanford, and I want to comment that this is the first time in the history of our great state that a governor has attended an athletic contest at East Carolina College.

Governor Sanford has assured me that it will not be the last time we expect him down here again. Ladies and gentlemen, this stadium is named the James S. Ficklen Memorial Stadium. The name was very well chosen, after considerable thought. There is no North Carolinian, more respected or admired than Mr. Ficklen. He represented progress and the inspiration of many people in eastern North Carolina. When we conceived of building the stadium, we wanted to name it in honor of a man who represented these things. And we hope that this stadium named for him will achieve these purposes in many types of activities. I should like to introduce his widow, Mrs. James S. Ficklen. Affectionately known by all of us here in Greenville, as Lucy. I want I want to introduce the late Mr. Ficklen son, Jim Ficklen Jr. My friends, I want to say in all sincerity, that a project of this type requires the inspiration and the hard work of many people. But generally, these people must have a leader. In this case, the leader was the chairman of the Stadium Committee, Mr. William M. They call him "Booger" Scales.

This man worked on untiringly for two years on this project, not only helping plan it but to make sure that we receive the funds with which to build it. I might add also that this has been one of the many civic projects that Booger Scales has successfully led. He has become according to many of his friends, and I agree with them, a legend in his day. It is very fitting I believe, for Mr. Scales, to have the honor of presenting this beautiful stadium to Governor Sanford for the people of North Carolina, Mr. Scales.

William M. Scales [3:46]
Governor on behalf of the 1000s of friends of East Carolina College and the countless friends of the late and great James S. Ficklen, and especially from a citizens of Greenville, North Carolina. It is indeed a pleasure that I present to the people of North Carolina through you as governor, a gift of this stadium, which we will fill, will bring enjoyment to hundreds of 1000s of people in the years to come. Thank you Governor.

Governor Sanford [4:33]
Say if it's an order. Thank you, Mr. Scales. That seems to be in legal order, this stadium, the accomplishment of many people as a symbol of the spirit, the drive the initiative that has come to represent all of the endeavors of East Carolina College, here as an institution. And this is a symbol of the spirit that is making this institution, a great contributor to the future and to the welfare of eastern North Carolina, and all of the people of North Carolina and on behalf of the people of our state, I want to present this document of gift to Senator Robert Morgan, Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Robert Morgan [5:49]
Thank you, Governor. I am proud to express the gratitude of the trustees, the faculty, the students, and the friends of East Carolina, to you and to the citizens and of Greenville, and Pitt County and the friends of the college everywhere for this wonderful stadium. It is a landmark in eastern North Carolina, and it will be a monument to the goodwill of the people of the entire state. Thank you
