Description
A letter from Samuel W. Thomas to his sister written while he was serving as a Union Naval seaman aboard USS Powhatan off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina. He mentions the capturing of ships (which he says is quite common), flags are being flown at half-mast for a sailor who died aboard USS Canandaigua, and he has been offered a position as school teacher to teach the other sailors to read and cipher.
