- A music-play with ballet, The Devil was an adaptation of Stephen Vincent Benét’s short story that originally appeared in the Saturday Evening Post in 1936. This was not the first adaptation of Benét’s work as it initially debuted for the New York City’s Martin Beck Theatre and even the big screen before its summer of 1953 run in Massachusetts.
