Beyond the Sundown letter

Title
Beyond the Sundown letter
Description
Undated letter to Frank Lewin about recording the music for Beyond the Sundown. It also includes production suggestions, such as where to cut and adjust some of the musical selections. Written in 1975, Beyond the Sundown was a play about the Alabama-Coushatta in the midst of the Texas War of Independence from Mexico, illustrating the story of their struggle to decide which party to throw their lot in with. Beyond the Sundown served dual roles of both presenting the history of the Alabama-Coushatta for tourists and preserving the history of their culture for their own tribal members.

I was in the 1977 show. I portrayed The Bowl and also Montesinos. I understudied that role when the actor left 3 days before opening it was decided I would perform both roles as they were never on stage together and there was time for make up and costume changes. It was pretty hectic but it was a great and magical summer. I can't believe it was 43 years ago.

I am the "Luke" that Roger refers to in this letter. I began as a dancer/dance captain in "Beyond the Sundown" in 1976, and then for 5 summers served as choreographer/associate director for the show. Frank Lewin was a lovely and generous man when I worked with him.

I was one of the original cast members of Beyond the Sundown. I played the part of The Bowl. It was one of only a few speaking parts. I still have my original script. Midway through our inaugural season we lost our theater manager and I took over that position.
