This image appears to be the left half of a stereo card. William James Topley took very few stereos (more accurately: few stereo negs are found in his fonds at Library and Archives Canada); most of his portrait work was done in his studio; informal poses like this are rare and generally are of family and friends. There are 62 Topley images in the on-line database at LAC (www.lac-bac.gc.ca) with the family name Fletcher, and two dating to 1877 might be a younger version of the man in the centre; although the nostrils are not the same, the right ear appears similar. I'm drawing on my 35 years of working with the photo collections at LAC. Does the reverse of the mount show any printed inscriptions indicating that the Topley studio produced the image? Or is the attribution simply noted by hand?
