- Letter from H. C. Hardy of 47 Front St., New York, to Captain Thomas Sparrow, Prisoner Of War, at Fort Warren [MA]. Hardy says that if Sparrow and his men need anything else he will be happy to supply them. Hardy will send some bags Sparrow asked for to Fort Warren. If they arrive after Sparrow leaves they will be sent back, but if Sparrow does receive them he can add them to the bill now due to Mr. Demill. Hardy then discusses the payments Sparrow needs to make for supplies provided to him and other prisoners of war while they were at Fort Warren. Hardy mentions $1350 due to him when Sparrow reaches Norfolk. The Civil War correspondence relates the activities of Thomas Sparrow and his Washington Grays from their formation as a volunteer company in April of 1861, until their parole from a Union prison in February, 1862. From the papers of Thomas Sparrow (1819-1884), a lawyer from Washington, N.C. who fought in the Civil War and later represented Beaufort County in the North Carolina General Assembly.
