Darryl's Restaurants were a great place in the late 70's for pizza and beer. Up to 1986 eighteen year olds could purchase & drink beer. This lack of beer sells at the College Campus themed restaurant's probably contributed to the closing of this restaurant chain. I enjoyed their simple menu from the late 70's the most. It highlighted Italian food and pizza.

(I just now saw this webpage while searching for a prospective source for Darryl's Barbecue Sauce.) Anyone who spent much time at the Greenville Darryl's knows assuredly that the tour de force of the menu was their beef ribs (marinated in their fantastic barbecue sauce and grilled). The barbecue sauce was eventually bottled (by Garner Foods Winston-Salem, NC) and sold at the restaurant checkout, and later also sold at local supermarkets. Those ribs --- probably gonna always be my favorite food. The Greenville Darryl's never recovered after being flooded by Hurricane Floyd in September 1999 (more than $1.5 billion damage in Pitt County alone). The Darryl's chain was gradually broken by mismanagement by a litany of new owners, none of whom had the loyalty, dedication or vision of the original Big 3. Such a shame.
