Description
Handwritten journal which includes a log kept by Charles Curtis Awkerman of Mount Union, Pennsylvania from April 1941 to June 1945 beginning with his enlistment in the U.S. Marine Corps. Most of the entries were made while he was serving on board the battleship U.S.S. North Carolina. Awkerman discusses movements of the ship and activities on board from the time of his assignment to the ship in the summer of 1941 until he was transferred in September 1943. He includes a record of the ship’s travels between Pearl Harbor and the South Pacific during the war and notes instances when the ship was under attack by Japanese bombers and submarines. The latter pages of the journal include a personal address book and a list of birthdays and holidays.
