That Square Deal.
There is a growing disposition to
take a more cheerful view of the
Administration's proposal that the
Government shall have the power
to freight rates. It is voiced by
some Wall Street organs and spokes-
men
revenues of the railroads
amount to two thousand million
a year, or nearly three times the
revenues of the Federal Government
These revenues are derived from the
transportation of seven hundred
million passengers and one thous-
and three hundred and four million
tons of freight, the at an
average rate of about three-quarters
of a cent a ton per mile. These
figures suggest some rather close
adjustment, and in this merely
statistical view it appears that the
matter of providing a square deal
for everybody is somewhat
Hut there is another view
It is a fact that up to date the

At any rate, they survived, and were

in 1897. this period
of prosperity they have been largely
free from Government control, and
able, in the main, to work out their
problems in their own way.
As everybody one of the
greatest of their problems, and the
one that causes practically the
body public complaint,

vital matter Government has;

of packing house products The;
original shipments ores amounted
to forty-six million tons, and in the
corresponding calendar year the
Steel Ci alone mined fifteen
million tons. What these figures
others that might he adduced
mean in the way of
hipping power is perfectly obvious.
The railroad can withstand the big
only when it is as big as the
shipper himself.
The Sherman h w and Interstate
Commerce Commission did almost
nothing to abolish rebates. The
great abatement of that evil was
brought about by the roads them-

If the Government is really to ex-

Crime Against Crime.
It took the jury at Wilson
eighteen minutes to declare not
guilty J. B. J Walls, on
trial for the murder of Percy Jones.
This was the case, it will be
in which a number of men
went room for the purpose
of whipping him or making him
leave town because these men did
not approve of his moral conduct,
and a light occurred which Jones
was killed and one of his assailants
wounded.
The men who undertook to ad
minister the law this case have
been taught a lesson which they will
remember as long as they live. The
next time nay one of them thinks a
of his town is leading such
an immoral life that he should be
punished he will hardly gather a
crowd of his under cover of
darkness, seek to administer what
they consider proper punishment.
Men who take into their own
hands enforcement of the law and
the punishment of law-breakers
apt lo suffer for it. If it does not
come at the hands of the law by way
of vindication it is felt in some other
way. No good nil ever come of the
breaking of one law for the purpose
punishing the violation of another.
It is true there is one class of this
kind of law breakers who
