Deposition, dated May 1761, sworn to by Joseph Hewes of Edenton, N.C., concerning a dispute he witnessed between two sea captains over wages for a voyage to Philadelphia. Hewes later served as a delegate to the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence.
