- Bridge damaged after being hit by a barge
- Officials are beginning a probe today to determine the responsible party involved in hitting the bridge center span. The bridge, the William B. Umstead, connects Roanoke Island and the Outer Banks by a three mile, two lane span. The structure was damaged toward the top of the highway area, and pilings underneath were almost completely destroyed. Officials said the bridge will be closed for up to 60 days.
