This mantelpiece is considered old-fashioned for the time period. The mantelpiece's charcoal gray paint indicates that it was intended for more public use. The accompanying video describes the construction of the mantelpiece, the history of the Hope mansion, and other fireplaces and mantelpieces in the mansion in more detail. Date approximated.
