- Description
- Upholstered open armchair of mahogany (HOA 39" WOA 28" DOA 25") in the Chippendale style; also known as an elbow, lolling, or French chair. The rear legs curve back to support the high upholstered back with a pointed crest. Front legs are straight and connected by an H stretcher. Curved arm supports are uncarved. Reproduction wool damask upholstery. Arm supports are partly restored. Produced in either Philadelphia or England, ca. 1760-1770. Associated with the Pollock-Devereux-Hinsdale families and is thought to have been owned by Thomas Pollock, III and later by his grandson Thomas Pollock Devereux. The Devereux family owned the Runiroi Plantation in Bertie County, N.C..
