- This edition of the Shanghai Daily News newspaper was most likely collected by George E. Peer while visiting Shanghai, China, between December 19, 1877 and August 1, 1878. The paper is dated October 18, 1877. It predates Peer’s visit to Shanghai and was most likely collected there as a souvenir. This edition of the paper includes an article about the S.S. Ringleader entitled "Navy ship visiting Shanghai". The Ringleader is referred to as a third class navy ship from the United States. The paper is written in Wenyan.
