Description
John Lawson collected natural history specimens from the colony of Carolina for James Petiver, a London apothecary. The Sloane Herbarium consists of linen paper sheets to which dried plants have been affixed with paste and strips of paper. date: c. 1718. Known specimen: Galactia (Galactia sp.), Sampson Snakeroot (Psoralea psoralioides (Walter) Cary), Blazing Star (Liatris squarrosa (L.) Michaux), Groundnut (Apios americana Medicus), Sunflower (Helianthus sp.)

At the request of Joyner Library in 2001, the Picture Library of The Natural History Museum in London digitized herbarium specimens collected by John Lawson. The museum has provided permission for Joyner Library to use these images for educational purposes including in our Digital Collections. East Carolina University's College of Arts and Sciences funded the cost of the initial imaging by the Picture Library.
