Joy R. Brown

This article is humbly submitted to
Sow A Seed by Shayla Biggs of
Greenville, North Carolina.

What Ts the Value of Your
Life?

oTherefore, I urge you,
brothers, in view of God Ts
mercy, to offer your bodies as
living sacrifices, holy and
pleasing to God-this is your
Spiritual act of worship. For
by the grace given me I say to

every one of you:
Do not think of
yourself more
highly than you
ought, but rather
think of yourself
with sober
judgment, in
accordance with
the measure God
has given you. ?
Romans 12: 1, 3

Take a look at your
life. Do you value
your life based on
how much money
you make, how
many friends you
have,. or how
beautiful you are? Or do you
place high emphasis on things
such as cars, houses, or
education? If so, then you
don Tt have high values for your
life. These are all materialistic
values that don Tt mean much in
the end and will only carry you
so far. They will lead you on
an endless journey to okeep yp
with the Jones T. ? Every time
they seem to move up the
corporate ladder and move up
in life, you are right behind
them trying to get to your next
stop. - Are these always bad

' values to have? No, These are

important values, but they.
should not be your top priorities

John

~ treasurer. ? He studied at

and most, important values,
Focusing solely on these values
can lead to low self-esteem
because they are never good

enough or T you never have "

enough. But what does God
say the value of your life should
be? God is not primarily
concemed with our looks but
He is concerned with our spirit,
We need:to let God shape our
spirit. We have to trust Him
enough to let Him make us
what he wants us to be. Are
you set on always getting
something for nothing? God

commands us to give. This is

an important value because we
can bring souls into the
kingdom this way. He takes
pride in us being generous. Are
you committed to the cause or
are you just going with the flow

of things?, God values

faithfulness, All of these values
are values that make us better
people and will carry us a long

way. They are not materialistic
- but spiritual values that shape

us as Christians and humans.

It Ts okay to have the money, the.
looks, the education, and cars.
But, what is most important is

what you do with those things.
Are you selfish with those

things, or.do you share with

those less fortunate? What Ts
the value of your life? -

LETTER TO. THE
EDITOR.

Why support Obama?

Are Blacks willing to
mortgage their future just
because a Black man is
running for president? We
may be, but we don Tt know it.
Senator Barack Obama was
an unknown commodity
before he won the Senate race
in Illinois against disgtaced
incumbent Senator Peter G.
Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald pulled
out of the race because of a
sex scandal. Alan Keyes, the
carpet bagger from Maryland,
moved to Illinois to replace
Fitzgerald. Obama beat
Keyes. This was a huge
victory for Barack, if you
believe Keyes ever posed any
kind of real challenge.

It has been said that, 90
percent of what we achieve is
through just showing up for
an event. But when the rubber
meets the road, how do we fill
the 10 percent gap? No doubt
that Obama is an eloquent
speaker. But more than
speeches will be required to
lead America into the future.
On the othe hand, there are
lessons to be learned from
Obama. We should follow his
lead and play ball, even if we
don Tt have the skills, Maybe
we will get lucky and get an
NBA Contract.

Overall, 80 percent of Blacks
support Obama, even though
he has proven to be a light-
weight on a number of key
issues: civil rights, ideals, and
substance. When it comes to.
civil rights, Obama proved
himself to be either inept or
unwilling to appropriately
address issues like the Jena
Six case. Civil rights are the
biggest issue facing Black
Americans, All of our'tights
flow through the Civil Rights
Act of 1964: education, jobs,
and housing. Obama Ts record
on Civil Rights is thin, Can
we afford to vote for-a person
who wouldn Tt march for us?

Deborah was a wife and a

stands in the line of Ehud and

unlikely of candidates for God
to select. But in another sense,
she was an obvious choice
because of the gifts of wisdom,
judgment and pastoral direction

was not because she had just

The leaders of the three

In theif letter to HUD, the

An employee with nearly 25

notified her position was

The employee was told if
she didn Tt accept a new job
title, with a $14,200 pay
cut, by a certain date, the

withdrawn.

Another individual with
nearly 19 years of
experience was told there
was no guarantee of
employment after the
restructuring process .

It took four employees more
than 16 months to obtain
copies of their personnel
files.

As the group protested,
Tyson, Edmonds and board
chairman Cordell Avery met
inside the central office to
discuss the controversy.

Rogers isn Tt targeting
minorities, Avery said. With
minorities making up 83
percent of the authority Ts

Avery said the assessment
process is understandably

Excuusrs COMMENTARY FROM OBAMA TS NEW PASTOR

Rev. Jeremiah Wright is
Standing on the Right Side
of History

By The Rev. Otis Moss, III

All my life I have been

- inspired by the work of Dr.

Martin Luther King Jr, and
my father, a King adviser, Dr.
Otis Moss Jr. The prophetic
brilliance of Dr. King to
speak about democracy and
the divine in the same breath
to this day sends a chill up my
spine. I have asked my
parents often: oHow did you
handle the pressure? ? oDid
you realize you were in the
middle of the delivery room

as America, with deep labor _

pains, gave birth to
democracy? ? My. parents
usually replied with smiles
and southern humility before
adding, oWe were on the right
side of history; ? As the new
pastor of Trinity United.
Church of Christ in Chicago,
I sense the labor pains of "
democracy are once again "
forcing America to give birth
to anew sacred dialogue
about race and class, because
a doctor/preacher has pushed
Us as a Country into a painful
but long overdue labor and
delivery.

I am convinced that
" mnuch of the recent
controversy stems from
the deep racial and
social divisions and
misunderstanding of
African-American
sacred rhetoric:

The words of Dr. Jeremiah A.
Wright have provided the
American people an
opportunity to give birth to a
new conversation about race
or abort the dialogue and.
substitute it with truncated
rhetoric about what should :
and should not be said from
behind the sacred desk. If we

. ?,?xamine briefly the.tradition

Dr. Wright follows, we get a
closer glimpse of the dialogue
I believe « our country is trying
to birth.

Dr. Wright stands it the.
prophetic tradition of Biblical
truth-tellers, such as Amos

and Micah. Rev, Dr, Martin.

Luther King preached from
Amos 5:24 (KJV), oBut let
judgment run down as waters
and righteousness as a mighty
stream. ? Dr. King was T

because he preached the
tenets of Christian love

during the preaching event. It
should be noted that this
oblue note ? is always paired
with ogood news; ? the sound
of'sorrow must be played "

Gospel can be introduced into.
the composition.

| The blue note ? of preaching

300 illiterate A frican-
American farmers j in Macon.
County, Ala., as guinea pigs

- from T 1932 to 1972 to test the

affects of the syphilis virus.
This is a tragic chord of

_ American history. The oblue

note ? of preaching lifts up
information in the March 23
issue of the New York Times,
disclosing that America
spends $5,000 per second for
the war in Iraq while

- Americans are losing health

care. The oblue note ? of
preaching puts before the
people of God human acts

humanity to hang her head. If
the only portion of a sermon
heard in the African-
American context is the oblue
note, ? it leads the listener to
wonder, oWhere is God? ? and
oWhat kind of Word is this? ?
There is more to African-

_ American preaching than the

tragic moment, but it Ts
through confrontation with
tragedy that we come to grips

~ with the fullness of God Ts

- love. The bloody, tragic,
horrific moment of the

crucifixion of Christ Ts

humanity puts us face to face
with the deep abiding grace of

God wrapped up in the oblue
note ? of Christ Ts humiliation.

The critical issue we are

being challenged to come to .
grips with at this moment is
our ability as Americans to be
bi-cultural. Are we willing to
look through the lens of
shrouded liberty lifted up by
Dr. Wright? Or, will we

_ choose to assume that our

faith tradition, political
perspective and cultural

Vantage point is the only

perspective worth engaging?
What an incredible gift to
give our children, if we.
choose to be bi-cultural :.

Americans instead of ethno-
~ centrists locked in our own ?

limited worldview of
humanity. The pain of this
omanufactured ? controversy
is that our democracy is
birthing a new conversation
into the civic arena on race, or
the grief of our democracy is

_- crying because our cynicism _

aborted her child: When the
history of this moment is

written, I pray we will all be

standing on the right side of
history.
