Furnifold Rhem, Sr., was the founder of the F. Rhem and Company hand made shingle company in Williamsburg, South Carolina. Special Collections has the company business papers and family correspondence. His son Flint Rhem, attended Clemson University and played on the ball team. He was so good that first the minor leagues and then the majors asked him to play for them. This letter, found in the collection, is from Ty Cobb inviting Flint to come play for the Detroit Baseball Company. Rhem ended up playing for the St. Louis Cardinals. There is more correspondence in the collection relating to Flint’s baseball career. You will no doubt find the letters of interest. At one point Flint vanished before an important Dodger game, only to return claiming that he had been kidnapped. The factual nature of this claim is still open to dispute.
