DD-370 was named for Augustus Ludlow Case (1812-1893). During the Mexican
War (1846-1848) Case held the town of Palisada against the Mexican cavalry
for two weeks to block the escape of General Santa Ana. During the Civil
War, Case was Fleet Captain of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron when
it captured Forts Clark and Hatteras in August 1861. He commanded the
Iroquois in the blockade of New Inlet, NC.
