5. Picture of the USS Arizona memorial, digitized from a photograph in the Walter K. Small Jr. Papers (#731/82), part of the East Carolina Manuscript Collection in the Special Collections Department of Joyner Library. The USS Arizona memorial is on the island of Oahu in Pearl Harbor about 2 miles from the Honolulu Airport. It was built over the sunken remains of the battleship USS Arizona when their ship was bombed by the Japanese Naval Forces. This item can be seen in the Looking Back category of the Day of Infamy Exhibit ( Case 7: Looking Back ).
6. Picture of the USS Helena , from the Online Library of Selected Images at the Naval Historical Center. Helena was at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked on 7 December 1941. She was moored at 1010 Dock Navy Yard on the east side of the harbor. Outboard of her was the minesweeper Oglala . By chance Helena happened to be in the berth normally assigned to the battleship Pennsylvania and so became a prime target of the attacking Japanese planes. Helena participated in many of the fiercest battles of the Pacific War including Guadalcanal, Rennell Island, and Savo Island. Helena was the first ship to receive the Navy Unit Commendation. She earned 7 battle stars for her actions later in the war. This item can be seen in the First Reactions category of the Day of Infamy Exhibit ( Case 2: Frist Reactions ).
7. Silhouette drawings of three Japanese fighter planes, drawn by Bennie Franks. Photographs of original Japanese fighter planes were used as a reference for the three silhouettes.
