The Rebel was originally published in Fall 1958. The purpose of the magazine was to showcase the artwork and creative writing of the East Carolina University student body. The Rebel is printed with non-state funds and beginning in the 1990s some volumes included a CD with featured music.

The Rebel features artwork, poetry, and essays featuring the creative work of East Carolina students. The staff of the Rebel produces the magazine using non-state funds out of their offices in the Self Help Building.

Online access to this finding aid is supported with funds created through the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). These funds come through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services which is administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. This grant is part of the North Carolina ECHO, Exploring Cultural Heritage Online, Digitization Grant Program.
