The collection consists of an agricultural notebook of Dr. Francis Roger Gregory and Mattie L. Gregory of Granville Co., N.C. The book contains records of sheep, pig, cow, and horse prices for 1868-1875 (pp. 100-224) and the gestation period for each (p. 5). It gives a day-to-day account of raising tobacco and corn and how the weather conditions affected these crops for 1824-1860 (pp. 12-60). There is a yearly account (1820-1850) of the most "cold unseasonable weather" (pp. 157-158).
The book gives the weights of different grains (p. 9) and crib content measurements (p. 4) as well as measurements for timber and shingling (pp. 6-8). It contains accounts of different persons who either bought items or borrowed money from Mattie L. Gregory (pp. 100-224) possibly as tenant farmers. Items included foodstuff, seeds, clothing, furniture, and liquor and the prices for each.
Poetry and rhymes were collected and noted (pp. 185-187, 119-120) as well as some proverbs, sayings, and predictions (pp. 61-98). Cures for sprains and other minor injuries as well as for rheumatism (p. 1) and distemper in a cow (p. 10) are noted.
