Biographical / Historical Note
Major Beverley R. Kennon, a member of the U.S. Army Medical Reserve Corps, worked in the fields of ophthalmology and otolaryngology during World War I. Kennon received an M.D. from the University of Virginia in 1893 and was commissioned in 1917. He served at several posts, including Camp Lee, Petersburg, Va; and Camp Hancock, Augusta, Ga. Beginning in October, 1918, he was stationed at the Justice Hospital Group in Toul, France.
In addition to routine correspondence, memorandums and orders (1917-1919), the collection contains military publications primarily concerned with training:
Outline of Lessons in Company Administration for Provisional Second Lieutenants (1917);
Studies in Minor Tactics 1915 (1917 reprint);
Training Camps for Reserve Officers... (1917);
Combat Firing (undated); and
Small Problems for Infantry (1917).
Epitome of Upton's Military Policy of the United States (1916) discusses the period between the Revolution and the Civil War, inclusive.
Miscellany includes photographic identification cards of Kennon and his wife, a directory of University of Virginia alumni serving in World War I in Europe (1918), "General Instructions for Medical Officers of the Section of Surgery of the Head," a list of field equipment needed by officers overseas, and a memorandum book.
