The Exum L. Curl Papers consist of a Day Book of the Nash County school Districts 12 and 13, as recorded by school teacher Exum L. Curl for the years 1854-1857. The book, which is hand written and bound by sewn leather, contains notes pertaining to school matters, listings of names of students, rules of the school, the dates of terms, number of days taught and number of days each student attended. Also included are scattered financial records and examples of problems in history, math, and verse.

      Daybook (116 described "items/pages") compiled by Common School Districts No. 12 & No. 13, at Beech Spring, Nash County, North Carolina school teacher; including four separate notebooks bound together, recording students names sorted by sex; days attended; tuition paid; rules of school, dates of terms, school committee reports; lesson poems, notes, etc.; also includes an account of the 1853 trial of of Kehuckey Baptist preacher, George Washington Carawan, in the Beaufort County Courthouse, for the murder of Clement H. Lassiter, a teacher in the Singing Geography School at Rose Bay, Hyde Park County, NC. Holograph Manuscript Volume.
