In this oral history interview, Dudley Flood speaks about his childhood, family life, career in education and work towards desegregation in the North Carolina public school system, his other work towards promoting equity through involvement with various organizations, and other civic service.


Biographical/historical information

Dudley Eargith Flood was born on September 13, 1932, in Winton, North Carolina. He received his bachelor's degree from North Carolina Central University in 1954. Flood taught high school from 1955 to 1967, also serving as varsity football and basketball coach, and was a principal at X School from 1968 to 1970. Flood worked for the State Department of Public Instruction from 1970 to 1973 and played a critical role in desegregation of school systems across the state. He has been involved in many civic organizations including the Good Neighbor Council, UNC Board of Governors, North Carolina Central University Board of Trustees. Married Barbara Thomas Flood in X. his other education. Flood was inducted into the Educators Hall of Fame at East Carolina University. dudley flood center
