Biographical/historical information

Dr. Bodo Nischan was a European History professor at East Carolina University from 1969 until his death in 2001. His particular interest was in Renaissance and Reformation history and Protestant theology and philosophy in Prussia and Germany. He was born in Germany in 1939 and emigrated to the United States in 1956. He attended Yale Univeristy, gradutating in 1961. He attended the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadeplphia, graduating in 1965. He earned his PhD from University of Pennsylvania in History in 1971. At ECU he was the Director of the History Senior Honors Program and Director of Medieval and Renaissance Studies Program. He served as interim History Department Chairman between 1998 and 1999. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and served as secretary of the Society for Reformation Research. In addition, he was a Danforth Associate and a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow. He published two books, "Prince, People and Confession: The Second Reformation in Brandenburg" (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1994) and "Lutherans and Calvinists in the Age of Confessionalism" (Aldershot, UK: Ashgate, 1999). He also published numerous articles, book chapters, book reviews, and encyclopedia articles relating to Renaissance and Reformation history and Protestant theology in Germany. In 2002 he was awarded Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor recognizing his significant contributions for his research and work at ECU.


Scope and arrangement

This collection contains material relating to Dr. Nischan's teaching, research, and work as a European History professor at East Carolina University from 1969 to 2001. Types of material include correspondence; manuscript drafts and proofs, and publications including his dissertation; course notes and history Department course syllabi; conference and professional association materials; newspaper clippings and periodicals; microfilm, cd, and computer diskettes; coin, stamp, and postcard collections; reviews by Nischan of published works and reviews of his work; sermons by Nischan; public lectures given by Nischan; and East Carolina University and History Department materials. Materials are related to Renaissance and Reformation History; Protestant theology and philosophy; Martin Luther; Medieval History; European Religious History, 1400-1700; German History, 1500-1800; and the Kennedy Assassination, 1963.
