The Seira Book Club was founded in 1967 by wives of ECU administrators. Members of the Aries Book Club split away to form a seperate book club. The group name, Seira, is simply Aries spelled backwards and was coined by charter member Lillian Jenkins. Eva Smiley, wife of East Carolina librarian Wendell, served as the club's original sponsor. Charter members were: Marion Bartlett, Millie Derrick, Hazel Dodson, Ellen Gray, Peg Haigwood, Lillian Jenkins, Mary Jones, Louise Morton, Mamie Moye, Helen Parkinson, and Ella Reynolds. The first meeting was held on April 25, 1967 at the home of Marion Bartlett. Members have traditionally had strong ties to East Carolina University with many members or their spouses having attended as faculty, staff, and students.
