Margaret Frances Brake was born October 10, 1935 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. She grew up on a farm outside of Rocky Mount and attended East Carolina College, earning her undergraduate degree in 1957 and her Masters in Education in 1961. She taught 6th grade in Newport News, Virginia and Burlington, Greensboro, and Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
