Each UNC campus has a local board of trustees that holds extensive powers over academic and other operations of its campus on delegation from the Board of Governors. UNC operates under an arrangement of shared governance that leverages the collective strengths of its campus chancellors and administrators, local boards of trustees, and the UNC President and Board of Governors. The University also honors the important traditional role of the faculty in the governance of the academy. This file inclueds policy memorandums, correspondence, Board of Governors Minutes, inauguration papers for President Friday and President Spangler, reports, statements, and proposals, as well as awards and publications.

Biographical/historical information

UNC General Administration houses the offices of the president and senior administrative staff for the University. This core administrative staff executes the policies of the Board of Governors and provides University-wide leadership in the areas of academic affairs, business and financial management, long-range planning, student affairs, research, legal affairs, and government relations. UNC-GA also has administrative oversight of a number of University affiliates.

The University of North Carolina is a multi-campus university dedicated to serving our state and its people through world-class teaching, research and scholarship, and outreach and service. The oldest public university in the nation, UNC traces its roots to the state's 1776 constitution, which held that "All useful Learning shall be duly encouraged and promoted in one or more Universities." Today, more than 220,000 students are enrolled on 16 university campuses across the state and at the NC School of Science and Mathematics, the country's first public, residential high school for gifted students.

The University of North Carolina's 17 campuses extend from the state's mountains to the coast. More than 220,000 students are enrolled at 16 universities and the NC School of Science and Mathematics, the country's first public residential high school for gifted students. Each year, we graduate more than 30,000 students from over 200 academic degree programs. Our graduates emerge as leaders, creators and researchers, prepared to connect with and give back to the communities that have supported UNC for more than two centuries.
