Scope and arrangement
The collection consists of microfilm copies of two ledgers. One is for the steamer OSEOLA (1836-1844), possibly based in Cheraw, S.C.; and the other is for the A. Burnett & Co. (1836-1839) of Cheraw, S.C.
The ledger for the steamer OSEOLA lists companies and/or commission merchants using the line from Charlotte, N.C., to Wiggins Landing, S.C., along the Pee Dee River, and then down the coast to Georgetown, S.C. Cotton appears to be the main item shipped, entries noting number of bales and cost. Entries for expenditures list labor, flats, brayboy, damage to cotton, city and town taxes, clothes, caulking, wood, nails, oars, and bacon purchased.
The A. Burnett & Company journal records purchase and sale of merchandise including such general store items as shoes, tobacco, sugar, and hats. Cotton accounts note the purchase and sale of cotton from individuals to merchants. The store also had regular dealings with the Morven store in Anson Co., N.C. In addition to the purchase and sale entries, state and town taxes are listed as are hauling expenses with team and wagon.
