Two notebooks found in the Laupus Library History Collection with no presently known provenance. One notebook is a dietetics notebook from E. Alexander at General Hospital, Patterson, New Jersey. The other notebook is Dr. Edward Beach Crowell's medical recipe book. An additional notebook was added to the collection in 2018. This notebook, purchased from Palinurus, was the business record for a Connecticut physician in the 1840s.

Biographical/historical information

Edward Beach Crowell was born 1830 January 20 to Nathaniel Pierce and Mary (Savage) Crowell in Chinquapin Hill, South Carolina. After taking a scientific course at Harvard, he graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York in 1853. He then went to Paris, France, where he engaged in the practice of medicine. A few years later he returned to New York City, but after finding the medical profession unfriendly, Crowell decided to study law. He became a member of the firm of Chapman, Scott, and Crowell where he practiced until 1890. Crowell married Catherine Van Pelt and they had three children: Edward Jr., Harriett, and Nathalie. He died on 1916 January 2.
