Biographical/historical information

Helen Dixie Koldjeski was born 1923 January 24 in North Carolina. She earned her Bachelor of Science and Master's in nursing education at Indiana University in 1960 and 1962 respectively. She completed her Doctorate of Philosophy in sociology in 1973, also at Indiana University. Over her career, Koldjeski worked at the National Institute of Mental Health, the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, and East Carolina University School of Nursing. While at ECU, she oversaw the establishment of the nursing master's degree in 1977, and later served as an advisor to the proposal and establishment of a PhD Program in 2002. Dr. Koldjeski died on 2018 October 4.

Scope and arrangement

The collection contains teaching materials, publications, writings, correspondence, certificates, and artifacts from Dr. Dixie Koldjeski. Papers range from her time as a student at Indiana University in the early 1960s to her work at East Carolina University to establish a doctorate program in nursing. There is extensive material on various publications, papers, and presentations Koldjeski did over her career. Several artifacts, including plaques, a brass nameplate, and tassels, exemplify Koldjeski's accomplishments in the field of nursing, specifically mental health.
